You know, even if you have a hot roommate like Bo (Anna Silk), you want to know you can reel in guys on your own. Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) trying to get her flirt on with Pete (Mark Hobson) the pizza delivery guy and Bo stealing her thunder?  Not cool. Bo doesn’t do it intentionally, but she sometimes plays the big sister to Kenzi—which is sort of cute—but not when you want to flirt with a cute guy!

Bo (Anna Silk) and Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) are attacked by the Djieiene

Solo steals this episode right from the start. Posing as a gypsy who exorcises evil spirits, and deliberately uses Bo as her support (bless Bo for always being game as a cover), she conducts a prolonged, exaggerated cleansing of a house where an elderly woman is killed with knitting needles. Going from room to room with lit sage in hand with exaggerated movements, exclaiming, “Get the gi-gi out!” plays out in a dramatically comedic fashion that had me laughing out loud. Even my brother was laughing with me, and he’s not so easily amused. The good and the bad: Kenzi successfully performs the cleansing, but an evil spirit, a mutant-sized black spider that resembles a black widow, crawls into her purse.

Just how many breeds of Fae are there? We’re introduced to the Djieiene, an ancient underfae that injects poison into its victims, causing hallucinations and paranoia. After being poisoned, both Kenzi and Bo nearly come to blows. A poisoned Kenzi is hilarious, with her bug-eyed paranoia, watching Jungle Jeeves and eating Toastie Bun Buns cereal and thinking Bo is out to kill her. Is it silly of me to say I nearly teared up when Kenzi, after being cured, expresses sheer remorse and horror when she realizes she nearly killed Bo? It’s a tender moment between the two, with Bo reassuring Kenzi of her complete trust in her.

You didn’t think I would pass up mentioning Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried), did you? Even when he’s not in a scene, his presence is always felt. We’ve got ourselves a burgeoning love triangle, with he and Lauren (Zoie Palmer) vying for Bo’s attention. The three of them inadvertently end up on a date, with Lauren and Dyson sniping at each other. We know Lauren acts on the Ash’s command and Dyson uses his job to investigate Fae events but the question is, are they on the same side? I hadn’t considered this possibility until Dyson poses this question to Bo. Lauren’s smile? Certainly puts a huge question mark in my head. It doesn’t come across as empathetic or concerned, but more sly and secretive. This was a fine nuanced moment by Palmer.

Lauren (Zoie Palmer) works to find a way to kill the ancient underfae

Detective Hale (K.C. Collins) notices Kenzi is jealous of Bo getting so much attention, both male and female, but she isn’t.  Is she really jealous, though? Maybe a little, but I think it’s because Bo is Fae. There’s a certain morality at play here, where Bo, despite being neither Dark nor Light Fae, uses her succubus powers for good. Judging from past episodes, Kenzi appears less interested in romance and more in becoming a serious investigator with Bo. She has a knack for working undercover, in many disguises. With each episode, Bo’s trust in Kenzi strengthens. It will be interesting to see how their relationship will be tested, as it surely will.

Now that I’m suspicious of Lauren’s motives for becoming close to Bo, Dyson is emerging as the knight in shining armor. When Bo tells him she will continue to see Lauren, he tells her to look to Lauren to heal her, and not him. When he walks away, he means it. Even so, he will continue looking out for Bo because he truly cares about her. Does Lauren? That remains to be seen.
