Review: Season Finale: Lost Girl, S2 Ep 22, “Flesh and Blood”
Air date: Friday, September 14, 2012, 10/9C on Syfy
Rating:
“Flesh and Blood” was everything I’d hoped for in a season finale. Granted, the battle might’ve been packaged up a little too neatly but there was enough tension and excitement to keep me entranced throughout. In such a momentous battle, there are bound to be injuries but, fortunately, the team pulls together. Team Bo for the win!
You’d think the bonds of Bo’s (Anna Silk) team wouldn’t have a weak link, but they do. Hearing Vex’s (Paul Roger Amos) voice when he tries to avoid taking the injection Lauren (Zoie Palmer) administers to the team was a huge annoyance. It’s like the writers brought him back as an antagonist because everyone else gets along so well. At least he makes himself useful in the battle against The Garuda (Raoul Trujillo) by preventing Trick (Rick Howland) from making a potentially fatal mistake. I’ll give him four gold stars for that.
Admittedly, I was worried when Trick summons Bo to his lair and tells her, “You could lose yourself to the darkness within you.” Her mother went to the Dark side, and Bo could suffer the same fate in this battle. Her grandmother Isabeau’s (Alisen Down) essence would prevent that from happening, but even after the battle, something is different. This is most likely a sign of what’s to come in season three.
Kenzi, as the sole human on the team, has to decipher the hieroglyphics in Trick’s lair to uncover The Garuda’s (Raoul Trujillo) hiding place. Why on earth she gets saddled with this responsibility, I’m not sure, but it provides some much-needed comic relief in an otherwise heavy episode. Leave it to Kenzi to make light of things, even in the face of an impending battle against an ugly, self-serving Fae.
Why doesn’t anyone know Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) got back his love for Bo? I admire his restraint; I’d be shouting it from the rooftops! Dyson knows fighting The Garuda is first and foremost in Bo’s mind so he doesn’t want to interfere with that. This is proof of his selfless nature. Isn’t he the coolest wolf man ever? I love him to bits; watching him wolf out makes me love him even more.
I thought Lauren would be on the periphery here but, actually, she figures quite prominently. Giving Bo a pep talk, calling her a leader—I thought that was pretty cool of her. There’s still a strong love between them so when Lauren is forced to stay behind with Vex, they really did not want to separate from each other. I didn’t tear up but that was one well-acted scene.
Through flashbacks, we learn how Trick handled the Great Fae War centuries past. Now, The Garuda wants him to correct the mistake he made back then, when he thought he was proffering peace between the Dark and the Light Fae. But it’s all hallucinations, and Trick falls under The Garuda’s spell. Truth be told, it was confusing to know what was real and what was not, but I think we’ll get a broader picture of Trick’s past in season three. It’s too bad Isabeau betrayed him.
OK, did you think Bo telling Kenzi to kill her if she went Dark was asking too much? Kenzi would never kill her even if Bo went full-on Dark and threatened to kill her. That’s how mad her devotion to Bo is; killing Bo would be like committing suicide. That promise Kenzi makes? It wasn’t a real promise because her sentence kind of trailed off. (I watch Lost Girl with closed captions and there was an ellipsis there.) Kenzi knew the gravity of what Bo was asking so she easily avoided making it a real promise. Clever.
Are you already looking forward to season three? I am! We’ll hopefully find out the consequences of Kenzi getting back Dyson’s love, and just how much of the Dark is lingering in Bo. It promises to be a hell of a ride!
