Con Man – Season Two, Episodes 1 and 2 Review. Delightful Poke at Tinseltown’s Cutthroat Industry

About “Con Man”

Con Man Season 2 premieres Thursday, December 8^th on Comic-Con HQ with new episodes airing twice a week available at midnight.

Con Man centers on the post-show life of Wray Nerely (Alan Tudyk) the co-star of “Spectrum,” a sci-fi series, that was canceled before its time, and went on to become a cult classic beloved by fans. Wray’s good friend, Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion) starred as the series Captain and has gone on to become a major celebrity, while Wray (Tudyk) hasn’t found his desired level of stardom. Wray is the begrudging guest of sci-fi conventions, comic book store appearances, and different pop culture events; however, everything is not as it seems from the outside. The series will explore these events and all the weird and crazy things that happen to them along the way.

We’ve all heard stories of the fast-paced, ever changing revolving door that is Hollywood. From changing assistants like you change your underwear, to hiring and firing agents left and right, Con Man is a delightful poke at Tinseltown’s cutthroat industry. These wonderful short episodes provide enough humor and bite to keep you wanting more. Tudyk is fantastic as the passive-aggressive-passive Nerely. I think I would watch just about anything he is in – and I probably have, save last season of Con Man. His performance is endearing, hilarious, and each episode has at least one laugh-out-loud moment.

A loving spoof on real life, Con Man pits one actor’s success against his good friend and fellow actor’s misfortunes in the business. Jack with his ruggedly handsome good looks, desperately wants to make a movie of “Spectrum” in which both he and Wray starred; however, Wray is trying to move away from all the pitfalls of being type cast.

Wray does a commercial…but things don’t go quite like he hoped.

Each episode contains a narrative relating to the previous episode, but viewers are able to pick up and watch the show at any time without feeling completely left out. There may an inside joke or two you may have missed but you can always go back and binge the previous episodes; you’ll be glad you did. The dialogue is filled with sarcasm and witty fun. Both Tudyk and Fillion turn in outstanding performances, each giving their character something fans can relate to. Wray is afraid to stand up for himself until he’s provoked, while Jack is more than capable of putting his foot down without hesitation. But both men have their own unique vulnerabilities outside of their aspirations for super stardom.

There are some interesting characters throughout each of the four episodes I watched. Mindy Sterling slays as Wray’s friend/agent/publicist Bobbie! Her comedic timing and goofball antics had my jaw slacked with disbelief while laughing out loud. Jon Huertas guest stars as an infamous director with a thick Hispanic accent and a flare for the dramatic. And Wray’s cross dressing landlord Dale (Jack Donner) will have you wincing and giggling at the same time. Watch your salsa…Dale likes to put his ba…well…you’ll have to watch and find out.
