The Sons of Anarchy cast were extremely busy during their press room interviews. “Hello, kids” was the way the charismatic Tommy Flanagan greeted us during this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Next, he proceeded to showcase his notorious outgoing personality by testing our recorders with an F bomb.
Will Chibs be loyal to Jax no matter what? “To the death! Chibs has been with Jax since he [Jax] was a little kid. I know Charlie [Hunnam], the president for fifteen years, for more than that and we have this friendship that I think shows on screen. He’s fiercely loyal whether the decisions are good or bad. This season, some decisions are not so good so Chibs get tested a lot this season, a lot.”
Will we see his wife and daughter this season? “I don’t think so.”
Is there a decision that Jax made that was challenging for Chibs? “So many things but I remember voting on whether or not we should kill Clay (Ron Perlman) — that weighed heavy on me because Clay saved me when I was a teenager, coming back from Ireland. He looked after me so I owed him so much. So when we voted to kill him last year, which we didn’t do obviously, that was kind of a heavy thing for me. Obviously, I would say that the most painful thing was losing Opie (Ryan Hurst); that was heartbreaking.”
Where is Chibs right now with Juice? “Juice (Theo Rossi) made a lot of huge mistakes and I don’t want to say anything but if you fucked up, there has to be some repercussions. So maybe there are some repercussions this year.”
Can you confirm Chibs’ promotion for next season? “Can I confirm it; am I allowed to?”
I responded with an “I don’t know.” Flanagan got all over that. “Like I just did?” he jokes and then kids some more. “Fucking hell, really? I go nomad and piss off into the mountain, me and Bobby Elvis (Mark Boone Jr.). I play Priscilla Elvis and he does Bobby Elvis and we live happily ever after in a cabin in the mountains; that’s what happens.”
How is the morale in the MC this season? “You know, it’s really difficult to talk about it, especially this season. I can’t give anything away. You guys, you just have to wait, to be honest. There’s so much going on and you’re like ‘oh my God, oh my God!’ We’re about to start episode seven and every time I get the script, it’s like ‘Fuck no, really?!’”
What has been your favorite moment on the show so far? “Cashing the paychecks!”
Shortly thereafter, Flanagan provided a more serious answer. “Jimmy Smits, my God, that guy is phenomenal. I love Jimmy. Jimmy is the best choice ever on the show, as far as guest stars go; he’s the best guest star we’ve had. I think he’s fantastic and such a sweet guy and I love him.”
What is happening with Donal Logue’s character, Lee Toric, this season? “He gets a haircut. There is nothing I can tell you guys.
Next, we spoke to Mark Boone Jr.
Where are things with Bobby this season? “He definitely has some unresolved issues with Jax. If I were writing this show, Bobby Munson would spank the living crap out of him but I don’t write the show. Personally, I think there was plenty of evidence to fry Clay but this is how I’ve had to reason it from the point of view of an actor —Bobby was trying to stop Jax from the way he was acting. If there was actual evidence, he had to let Clay live to stop Jax from the way he was going. Jax was off the rails last season. It’s the rule of the Club and that is what Bobby is following, and Bobby is always following the rules of the club.”
What is Bobby’s agenda this season? “From my point of view, Bobby will try to straighten out the Club. But Bobby may have had enough; he may have flown to the Caribbean. I bet he would have had a great time in the Caribbean.”
Are you still working on your music? “I’m still working on the music. I have a lot of music and putting out an album these days…it really generally doesn’t go anywhere. You’ve got to tour and I can’t do that much. I did a movie this year on the break and that movie is going to close the Toronto Film Festival. It’s an Elmore Leonard [film] with Jennifer Aniston, Moss Def, Jon Hawkes, Tim Robbins, Isla Fisher, and myself.”
It was such a contrast to talk to Flanagan and Boone Jr. despite their outgoing personalities. While Chibs is fiercely loyal to Jax, Bobby is the person who challenges Jax most. It’s going to be nerve-wracking to see if these characters will pay a high price for their personal allegiances.
