New guest writer alert!

I’m Emily; this is my first  post on YEC (bug Judy if you like me) and I’ve got some Falling Skies scoop for you that I heard during the SDCC press room!

Now, mind you, Falling Skies is one of my favorite shows right now. However, once I found out I would be covering for Judy’s team in the pressroom, all of my burning questions completely vanished from my mind. Thankfully, my fellow bloggers at the back table kept the conversations flowing. There were a couple times I chimed in though, go me! Oh, did I mention this was my first pressroom experience ever?? No? Well, it was and it was intimidating, but I felt right at home.

Unfortunately, there were no pictures or video allowed during the interviews, but the publicists were kind enough to give us a chance to take a whole cast picture. L-R: Drew Roy, Will Patton, Sarah Carter, Doug Jones, Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Connor Jessup, Colin Cunningham

The first pair on our docket was Connor Jessup and Moon Bloodgood. Unfortunately, Moon never actually made it to our table. Connor made it a joke saying, “she had a baby; she’s being annoying about it,” but immediately followed with a compliment, “her baby is terrifyingly beautiful,” that totally melted our hearts. After a little more expose – where we learned Connor just got back from an extended vacation in Japan and planned on visiting the Expo Hall, but wouldn’t be cosplaying (aka donning a costume as his favorite character, etc.) – we dove into juicier future plot convo. He teased about the episode, “Strange Brew,” explained their situation with the new Season 4 writers, joked about his all black wardrobe, and was a bit nostalgic when he realized he started the show at age 15 and is now 19.

My new favorite duo on television (due to this interview) is Hal and Maggie, played by the lovely Drew Roy and Sarah Carter. I really enjoyed how they delved into the relationship that they built together. Sarah really pinpointed it: “you naturally feel connected to the character and you are immersed in this world…. I look at Drew and all my feelings for Hal are right there.” Of course, Drew added a silly spin on it revealing he gets jealous when he sees Sarah talking to an extra at Craft Services. He did get serious for a minute when explaining how he got into character during the “creepy Hal” scenes. (I asked that question, by the way.)

Colin Cunningham and Doug Jones stopped by after that. I have to admit, I had no idea why Doug Jones was present until someone mentioned he played Cochise. Emily fail. They both gave us insight into “Strange Brew,” as well. Mostly asking if viewers would realize Doug/Cochise, in the alternate universe, was recognizable in human form. My answer was no, but I kept that to myself. Colin basically blushed when complimented for his performance over the last season. He gave thanks to the writers and directors who gave him the latitude to improvise during many takes. When I asked him about his relationship with Maggie—how he can taunt her and care about her at the same time—he disclosed interesting information: “I’ve always played… When I have my scenes with Maggie (Sarah), I always think that there’s a sexual history. We have a history. She’s always played, ‘Hell no, we don’t!’” I’m glad I got a good question in there, even if while transcribing audio, I couldn’t stand the sound of my voice!!!

I’ve been dying to hear Noah Wyle’s voice, in person, since The Librarian days. Here I finally got my chance! And readers, it’s just as amazing, if not better. While he was regaling his tale of filming “Strange Brew” (apparently a hot topic), I zoned in on his voice and beard and just enjoyed the ride. The story was about continuity during the coffee shop scene, in case you wanted to know. YEC will have an audio clip for you! After a couple minutes, Wyle was joined by his co-star, Will Patton, who is such a sweetheart. I bet he won’t like me broadcasting that to the world. Seriously though, what really set him apart was the direct eye contact he gave to everyone when he first sat down and said “hello.” What a guy! Wyle and Patton threw around very small tidbits of information, really focusing on the “family” behind the show and what it means to be a part of it. A great example of this is something Wyle brought up himself: What role does religion play in Falling Skies? His answer, “The Second Mass is our religion. That’s where we find our faith, that’s where we find our enduring strength. And that gives the show a heart; it gives it a spine that we can hold onto.” Patton chimed in, “It’s Breaking Bad meets Downton Abbey!”

To wrap up my first pressroom, we were treated to one last interview with a couple of the producers—Remi Aubuchon and Greg Beeman. A few things went right over my head, but overall their behind-the-scenes take on the show was really helpful.

Unfortunately, there were no pictures or video allowed during the interviews, but the publicists were kind enough to give us a chance to take a picture of the entire cast… Me and my shaky hands did not do a great job of capturing the moment. I’m sure YEC will upload my lovely handiwork for your pleasure and future teasing!
