Chicago Comic-Con: Tom Felton Admits to Dabbling in Fan Fiction and Hopes to Play James Bond

Apparently, the Potterheads have a soft spot for Draco Malfoy, as the fans anxiously awaited Tom Felton’s appearance. Felton has some hardcore fans, and those who are really into his music have their own denomination, The Feltbeats, who were present at the Chicago Comic-Con.

As we waited for Felton to come on stage, I thought about how I still envision him as the kid actor from the Potter films (2001-2009) and Anna and the King (1999). But once he appeared, it was obvious he is no longer a kid. In fact, Felton is a charming guy with a strong female following; women of all ages seem to love him. Being English, his humor is fairly self-deprecating but he’s witty, too.  As an aside, one of his favorite words appears to be “lovely,” which he repeatedly used for his fans.

Tom Felton is a big Lego fan and would like to begin collecting although he doesn’t have any merchandise.

The first fan question was about Felton’s favorite scene from the Harry Potter series, to which he responded by equating it to being asked to choose his favorite school day from the last 10 years: “Tough question, mate,” he said. “The last scene when we were in the courtyard with Voldermort in one end and all the goodies in the other one, quite a Western showdown.”

Next, Felton was asked about who he hung out with from the Potter cast. “No one, they’re all a bunch of…,” he said, jokingly pretending to bad mouth his former cast members. “I hung out with Slytherin crew a lot…Daniel (Radcliffe) has been a bit of an inspiration and a good friend of mine but also the adults the parents Jason Isaacs and Helen McCrory. They looked after me, it was a nerve-wracking place to be sometimes and these guys were all very sweet.”

My favorite moment of the Q&A had to be when someone asked Felton about fan fiction. “I’ve dabbled, I’ve struggled,” he confessed. He also admitted to having seen “some worrying illustrations.” Although most actors tend to cringe at the mere mention of fan fiction, Felton wasn’t done talking about it.  He mentioned it again when he was asked about the most creative thing he had seen Potter fans do.

Felton preferred hair coloring and regular touchups instead of wearing a wig that matched what one fan described as Draco’s unnatural shade of haircolor.

The creating spirit seems endless but it has to be this fan fiction stuff. I can understand why someone may write a fan fiction about Harry running off with Hermione or whatever it may be but a whole 80 pages of Draco and an apple?” Felton wondered with amusement. “It’s weird in a way for me but it’s also great that so many people have been able to come up with their own very unique stories.”

Although we may not be seeing the Fifty Shades of Draco anytime soon, fans can expect to see an album from Felton, as he said he hopes to release one soon.  “It’s something that I enjoy doing,” he said, talking about music and playing with his guitar.

In regard to future roles he would be interested in, Felton said, “Anything that steers me towards being Bond, James Bond, one day.”

The fans loved the Bond response, but then Felton became serious. He said he thinks the worst part he could get is a role where he played himself, as he often second guesses himself. That is why he enjoyed playing his most famous role to date: “It’s really nice to play someone [like] Draco; although he’s quite a complex character, he’s very black and white in many respects. It’s nice to think when you are playing a character to think this is exactly what you’re doing and there is no second guessing.”

Based on his recent role in Planet of the Apes and his work in Harry Potter, one can assume Felton is mainly attracted to playing bad guys, but that isn’t the case: He seeks “anything that challenges me and “takes me out of Muggle world today.” For instance, Felton recently nabbed the role of a heroic French prince. “Riding horses and killing the bad guys, I enjoyed that.

Although Felton declined to sing as he had been speaking for close to four hours (according to the panel’s moderator), he was a fun sport during the Q&A, even agreeing to be a transatlantic tree hugger and accepting a request to say “Potter” as he does in the films. However, the best thing he did was showcase his significant experience in show business by deftly working the crowd and enjoying his connection with his fans.
