Review: Lost Girl, S1 Ep 13, “Bloodlines”
Air date: Monday, April 9, 2012, 9/10c on Syfy

“One down, boys. Let’s go start ourselves a war.”
Saskia (Inga Cadranel) returns, even more gleefully murderous than the first time we met her. Now we know why Trick (Rick Howland) is fearful of her—she’s hated him since he turned her in to the Dark Fae for execution. You see, they were part of the same clan. No matter that it was after she’d killed a Dark Fae clan leader during a small rebellion she started. We also learn Trick is a blood sage and can alter history by using his blood, which he had done to make peace between the Light and Dark Fae. I can’t imagine how different things would be if Trick hadn’t used his exceptional power to change the past, especially Saskia’s. She’s hell bent on killing the Light Fae elders, and is partly successful. The Ash (Cle Bennett) barely manages to survive.
So, Saskia isn’t just Saskia. She’s also Aoife, Bo’s (Anna Silk) mother. The moment Bo learns this feels strangely anticlimactic. When Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) admits to hiding this truth from her, Bo seems lost but hardly falling apart, like I expect her to be. Am I underestimating her? Possibly, but now she knows she can’t trust Dyson, and Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) may be the only person who has her back. Even knowing how evil her mother is, Bo is hopeful they can be a good mother/daughter team. I think she’s being too optimistic. A bit Pollyanna-ish, I dare say. She has no idea just how evil Aoife really is. That’s because Trick hasn’t told her everything about her mother, namely that instead of executing her, the Dark Fae tortured her for centuries.
Cadranel infuses Aoife with an evil glee, which makes it easy to hate her, but also easy to really not think much about her. She’s manipulative with Bo, cooing over her, but not genuinely caring about her in any motherly way. Aoife values herself over Bo, who she sees as a pawn more than anything else. It’s hard to feel sympathy for Aoife, knowing about Trick’s betrayal.
Ah, we see Kenzi has a soft spot! She reads trashy romance novels in secret. She’s a huge sucker for love stories, which is why she begrudgingly accepts Dyson’s plea for help after he tells her he loves Bo. What a softie! There’s no way she can say no to that. Maybe Det. Hale (K.C. Collins) will be her honey next season? They are keen on sparring with each other and have a good chemistry, and they both don’t have romance in their lives, so why not hook them up?
Desperate to help Bo fight her mother, Dyson seeks The Norn (Kate Trotter), a tree-dwelling crone. It’s fascinating to see how normal The Norn seems—she looks like your average middle-aged woman, only there’s a huge tree in the middle of her house. Dyson wants to sacrifice his wolf powers for Bo, but The Norn, sensing there’s something more to his sacrifice, steals his love for Bo, leaving only his memories of her. This is so unexpected, my breath catches in my throat. How sneaky (and even a bit cruel) is The Norn?! I can’t believe it. I feel sad for Dyson, but Bo becomes strong enough to overcome her mother so his sacrifice isn’t for naught.
As an end to the first season, “Bloodlines” is a fine episode. With the revelations of Aoife as Bo’s mother, Trick’s long-held secrets, Dyson’s sacrifice, and the surprising deaths of the Light Fae elders, season two promises to be a killer one. I’m looking forward to seeing the change in Bo and Dyson’s relationship and the outcome of Trick’s blood sacrifice. Also, what will season two bring for Kenzi? Her character development this season is weak so I expect more growth, not to mention a burgeoning relationship with Det. Hale. Uh huh. I already said it. I want some lovin’ between those two!
