Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins Cast of “Rock of Ages” in an Original Role

Oscar© winner, Catherine Zeta-Jones, who was recently hospitalized for bi-polar disease, has been signed onto the movie Rock of Ages to play an original character, a villainess, written expressly for the movie. That’s according to Adam Shankman (So You Think You Can Dance, Hairspray), director and choreographer of the film, who consistently tweets about the movie and the casting choices. Joining Zeta-Jones are Tom Cruise as Stacee Jazz, Alec Baldwin as Dennis Dupree, Julianne Hough as Sherrie Christian, Diego Boneta as Drew Bowie, Mary J. Blige as Justice Charlier and Russell Brand as Lonny/Narrator, as well as Paul Giamatti who will be playing Jaxx’s manager. According to wikipedia.org, Constantine Maroulis (American Idol finalist in season four) will have a cameo in the show, which is something I find surprising. Maroulis was hailed for his portrayal of Drew Bowie in the Broadway musical of the same name, on which the movie is based. As a matter of fact, he even received a Tony nom for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a musical for his role. So why only a cameo, if that?

Given that the movie will entertain us with a mash-up of songs from people and groups in the 1980s –Pat Benetar, Twisted Sister, Styx, Bon Jovi, Journey, and Poison, among others – it’s going to be a lot of fun. I can see it now – people will be singing and dancing in the aisles. I know I will be! And as soon as the album is released, I’ll be first in line!

According to moviefone.com, “For those of you who’ve yet to see the musical, it takes place in Hollywood in the 1980s and follows Sherri, a small-town girl who moves to the city in hopes of becoming an acting star. She goes to work at The Bourbon Room where she strikes up a relationship with Drew, the busboy. Meanwhile, a pair of German city developers are initiating a plan to create a cleaner lifestyle in the area and that means sex, drugs and rock-n-roll are out and so is The Bourbon Room.”

“Rock of Ages,” entering production next month in Miami, will be released Summer 2012.
