“I never forget a face, especially if I cut it.” – Dr. Kelly Nieman
As a Castle fan, I enjoyed last night’s “Resurrection” which brings back an old case and the return of two devious minds – renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Kelly Nieman (guest star Annie Wersching) and serial killer Jerry Tyson (Michael Mosley), aka “3XK.” But is it really Jerry Tyson? We saw Castle (Nathan Fillion) pump him full of lead and him falling off the edge of a pier into the murky waters below in “3XK?” Don’t believe everything you see or hear because things are about to get crazy up in here.
When the body of Susan Watts (Laura Coover), a pretty blonde woman, is found dead in an alley, it’s Lanie (Tamala Jones) who picks up on the similarities of two previous murders that involved dopplegangers of both her and Esposito (Jon Huertas). “Pam Hodges” looked exactly like Lanie while “Daniel Santos” looked exactly like Esposito. When Lanie tells Beckett (Stana Katic) about her suspicions, Beckett realizes Dr. Kelly Nieman is back in town.
As the investigation behind Susan’s death leads to more puzzling information, we learn Susan also has a doppelganger named Amy Barrett (Laura Coover). But it’s not how much Susan and Amy resemble each other; it is the person they are keeping company with – a man named Michael Boudreau, who looks an awful lot like Jerry Tyson.
Captain Gates (Penny Johnson) allows Castle to consult on this one case only since both he and Ryan (Seamus Dever) are so intimate with the Jerry Tyson case. Castle recounts the case to the police team, recalling when Ryan’s service weapon was stolen by Jerry and used to kill someone. This case is personal for all of them and they are determined to prove Michael Boudreau is really Jerry Tyson. But is he?
Michael claims he had cosmetic surgery done by Dr. Nieman but it’s not clear if he chose to look like Jerry Tyson or she did. Why would anyone want to purposefully look like a known serial killer? Things don’t seem to add up but when Beckett checks Michael’s fingerprints, they don’t match what what is on file for Jerry. And with the mysterious disappearance of all the case files, DNA samples, and evidence in the Jerry Tyson case, the NYPD is hard pressed to prove Michael is actually Jerry.
One last hope is to visit Jerry’s mother Gretchen (Lily Knight) but it turns out she isn’t his biological mother. She dated Jerry’s father, who ran out on both of them. Gretchen tried to raise Jerry but she couldn’t handle it, claiming, “Nothin’ I ever did coulda made him what he was.” How wrong she is. What little time they spent together left a lasting impression as is evident when we see what Gretchen looked like when she was younger. She looks exactly like Susan and Amy. Talk about mommy issues! Michael/Jerry is creating versions of Gretchen to stalk and kill and Beckett and the gang are convinced Dr. Nieman is assisting. The question is why? Why go through all the trouble of creating clones of Gretchen when Jerry could just kill her out right?
While everyone is trying to use a baby tooth Beckett and Castle find at Gretchen’s to get the necessary DNA to prove Michael is really Jerry, there is another plot swirling around that pulls Beckett away from the precinct. But when the DNA doesn’t give the police the definitive proof they need, Captain Gates is forced to let Michael go. But where is Beckett? She’s out trying to help Amy who called crying for assistance. As we see at the very end of Resurrection,” the entire thing is a ruse to get Beckett alone, but for what purpose? We know Dr. Nieman has a lady boner for Beckett’s facial bone structure and would literally kill to work on her, but I guess we’ll have to wait to find out what’s really going on.
Overall
“Resurrection” is part of one of two in the return of Jerry Tyson and Dr. Nieman. With previews showing the worst case scenario for Beckett’s future, I’m anxious to see what happens in part two. Do you think this is the real Jerry Tyson? Or is this Michael Boudreau sliced and diced to look like Jerry and brainwashed by Dr. Nieman to trap Beckett? The writers really took us for a spin with “Resurrection” but I still haven’t forgotten “Montreal.” Wild thought – I wonder if Jerry’s return has anything to do with Castle’s disappearance at the beginning of the season?

I loved Resurrection and look forward to part 2. The writing and acting was insane in this episode. I hate when Beckett is in peril..she feels like one of my children. Nice review and questions raised.
