Casting News for “Oz, The Great and Powerful”

Now that the powers that be (Disney) behind Oz: The Great and Powerful have decided to go with James Franco as the Wizard (Robert Downey, Jr. and Johnny Depp were originally considered) in this prequel to the famous Wizard of Oz, the decision has been made to cast Mila Kunis in the role of Theodora, initially a good witch and sister to the infamous Glinda.

The film is told from the Wizard’s point of view and explains how he came to be the all-powerful Wizard. How, as a young illusionist he is forced to flee the traveling circus—and when his hot air balloon gets caught up in a tornado, he ends up in munchkin land, aka Oz, where he encounters both Theodora and the Wicked Witch of the East, as well as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. When the Wizard rejects Theodora’s advances, she becomes evil, turning into the Wicked Witch of the West. Oz, the Great and Powerful will be directed by Sam Raini (Spiderman) and is slated to be released in 2013.

So far, no one has been cast in the supporting roles so I’m thinking maybe Kathryn Heigl or Reese Witherspoon as Glinda, and possibly Lauren Ambrose or Rose McGowan as the Wicked Witch of the East. According to collider.com, though, Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams, Kate Beckinsale, Keira Knightley and Rebecca Hall are all under consideration for these role.

What do you think? Who would you like in these roles? Leave me a comment below so we can discuss!
