What a Tragic, Sad State of Affairs. Review: The Americans – “Only You”

What a Tragic, Sad State of Affairs. Review: The Americans – “Only You” 3

No words are necessary as the final scenes of “Only You” unfold. The haunting slow melody and lyrics of “To Love Somebody” say all that is necessary. I know The Americans is just a TV show but when the screen faded to black, I felt completely empty and sad. When a show can elicit such depth of emotion, you know you have a hit on your hands.

Curing Comas. Review: Shameless – “Civil Wrongs”

Curing Comas. Review: Shameless – “Civil Wrongs” 14

If anyone has trouble with William H. Macy playing Frank Gallagher, well, he has proved you wrong in “Civil Wrongs.” Macy absolutely shines this week as the pawn between the gay marriage activists and the conversion therapy group. Jeremy Allen White also proves his acting chops during Lip’s hospital bedside scenes with Karen (Laura Slade Wiggins). And let’s not forget Joan Cusack as Sheila. That woman says more with her tears and facial expressions than some actors connote with real dialogue. Oh hell, everyone was outstanding this week!

The Hunt for an Assassin. Review: The Americans – “Mutually Assured Destruction”

The Hunt for an Assassin. Review: The Americans - "Mutually Assured Destruction" 17

It saddens me to say I was disappointed with “Mutually Assured Destruction.” While it moves Philip and Elizabeth’s relationship along, albeit not in an area I care for, it is more a filler episode than anything else. It moves slowly in parts, and is nothing like I expected it to be.

Frank Becomes Famous. Review: Shameless – “Frank the Plumber”

Frank Becomes Famous. Review: Shameless - "Frank the Plumber" 21

Gay rights and relationships are at the forefront of this week’s installment of Shameless. “Frank the Plumber” gives us a mixed bag of good and bad feelings, and at the end, fear. Fear that Lip (Jeremy Allen White) will return to Karen’s (Laura Slade Wiggins) side to nurse her back to health after initially telling her they’re over. But I’m getting ahead of myself… Frank (William H. Macy), the face of the gay rights movement? Say it ain’t so!

A Coming of Age Tale. Movie Review: My Brother the Devil

A Coming of Age Tale. Movie Review: My Brother the Devil 22

El Hosaini does an incredible job of putting a fresh face on a tired genre, treating her characters with respect, and providing us with a compelling tale of character development on two different levels. While the film has been marketed as ruthless gang fare, it is anything but. It is more a coming-of-age tale that deals with wanting, being powerless, and a struggle for sexual identity. This is a film that is not to be missed; my advice – go see it as soon as it is available.
