Those Three Little Words. Retrospective: Nurse Jackie – “Heart”

Those Three Little Words. Retrospective: Nurse Jackie - "Heart" 1

What a way to open “Heart.” Not only do Frank (Adam Ferrera) and Jackie (Edie Falco) have sex for the first time, but he admits his true feelings for her. What could have been an awkward moment becomes fun with the honest, light-hearted dialogue and terrific delivery by both Ferrera and Falco. Although, I did glimpse a bit of fear in Jackie’s eyes before she turns the light out. Could it be that not all is what it appears to be?

Problems on the Homefront. Retrospective: Nurse Jackie – “Forget It” 2

People certainly do have strange ways of sabotaging themselves when they don’t think they are worthy. But that’s what I don’t get—why does Jackie think she’s undeserving of the love Frank seems so willing to bestow upon her? Is accepting real love the chink in Jackie’s armor?

Lessons Learned…Maybe. Retrospective: Nurse Jackie – “Teachable Moments”

Season 5, Episode 7 Air Date: Sunday, May 26, 2013, 9 pm ET/PT on Showtime Rating:   “Teachable Moments” grabs me immediately with its opening scene. Officer Frank Verelli (Adam Ferrara) visits Jackie (Edie Falco) at All Saints to cancel their lunch date instead of sending her a text. “I’m gonna cancel by text message? …

Dr. Carrie Roman (Betty Gilpin). I know some women sleep their way to the top, but doctors? Doesn’t Coop realize how dangerous it is if he keeps stepping in for Carrie? How is she ever going to learn? Is sex that important to him? Oh, wait. We’re talking about Coop here. Seriously, I hate to think things like that happen in real life but I suppose they probably do, which is very frightening to me. It would be a lot better if Coop stepped up and helped Carrie by teaching her instead of doing her job for her. The world doesn’t need another ineffective doctor.

Jackie Goes on a Date. Retrospective: Nurse Jackie – “Good Thing”

Jackie Goes on a Date. Retrospective: Nurse Jackie – “Good Thing” 10

Jackie’s revelation about how stressed she is about her date with Frank is honest and realistic. While it’s nice to see her smile, I think we all know how difficult this must be for her. It’s been a long time since she’s been out in the dating world. And Grace (Ruby Jerins) doesn’t help the situation any by sneaking out with her boyfriend Danny (Danny Flaherty) instead of being where she’s supposed to be.

TV News: Two More Guest Stars Upped to Regular Status on The Americans 14

As I surmised in my review of the season finale of The Americans, Annet Mahendru will return in Season 2 but this time as a regular member of the cast instead of as a guest star. She’s not the only one to achieve regular status, though, as Alison Wright has also been promoted to a series regular. Susan Misner, FBI Agent Stan Beeman’s (Noah Emmerich) wife, has already been upped to series regular.

Colored Sticky Notes. Retrospective: Nurse Jackie – “Lost Girls” 15

I swear, if Jackie doesn’t go out with Frank, I will! He’s absolutely adorable and has a fantastic sense of humor. He reminds me of a big old teddy bear I want to squeeze to death. Plus, he always knows the right thing to say, and it’s obvious he respects Jackie and how important her job is to her. Wait! My mother always told me if it looks or sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Please don’t tell me Frank is going to end up being an asshole. That’s the last thing Jackie needs.

A Sober Jackie is a Happy Jackie. Review: Nurse Jackie – “Smile”

A Sober Jackie is a Happy Jackie. Review: Nurse Jackie – “Smile” 17

It’s so nice to see Jackie and Kevin connecting again, making little jokes to each other and looking like the Jackie and Kevin of old, instead of carping at each other as has been the norm since Kevin found out Jackie was addicted to drugs. Why, oh why, do the writers take this away from us after a mere five minutes? I had such hope for them. I suppose it’s so Jackie can connect with Sergeant Frank Verelli (Adam Ferrara), who comes to the hospital to take her statement.

Secrets Revealed. Review: The Americans – “The Oath” 19

We’ve spent quite a bit of time examining the parallels between the Americans and the Soviets during the Cold War, and “The Oath” does a good job of continuing in that vein. It explores the similarities and differences between Martha (Alison Wright) and Clark/Philip’s (Matthew Rhys) friendship, and Stan’s (Noah Emmerich) relationship with Nina (Annet Mahendru), and shocks me with some of the outcomes.

Divorce Can Be Depressing. Review: Nurse Jackie – “Luck of the Drawing” 20

Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) and Jackie (Edie Falco) can’t come to an agreement on the terms of their divorce, and Dr. Prentiss (Morris Chestnut) uses a special technique to remove a spider from a little boy’s (Skylar Gaertner) ear. Problems arise when Hannah (Sarah Steele), one of last week’s bus crash victims, returns to All Saints with sepsis, which she contracted at the hospital, and Zoey (Merritt Wever) cheerfully volunteers to be the hand wash monitor. It’s just another day on the job at All Saints. Or, is it? After all, it’s Jackie’s birthday!
