How to Get Away with Murder Series Premiere – “Pilot” Review. Dead Bodies. 1

I have no doubt How to Get Away with Murder is going to become another hit series for ABC, and it’s the tangled interpersonal relationships that will make it so. That and, of course, Viola Davis.

Ray Donovan – “Rodef” Top Five Moments. Murphy’s Law. 3

As penultimate episodes go, “Rodef” is top class. It takes us a little closer to winding up certain story lines, setting up this season’s finale perfectly. I must say, I’m sorry this is the last we’ll see of Shorty. I truly enjoyed his character, and Duvall is to be commended for his excellent portrayal of Mickey’s cancer-ridden, pot smoking friend. They certainly had a lot of good times together.

Starring Alexandra Shipp, the movie, based on the best selling novel Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, also stars Rachael Crawford and Sterling Jarvis as Aaliyah’s parents Diane and Mike Haughton; A.J. Saudin as Aaliyah’s brother Rashad Haughton; and Lyriq Bent as her uncle and music manager Barry Hankerson, as well as Anthony Grant as Damon Dash, Izaak Smith as Timbaland, Elise Neal as Gladys Knight and Chattrisse Dolabaille as Missy Elliot.

Tyrant Gets a Second Season from FX and Executive Producer, Howard Gordon

Tyrant Gets a Second Season from FX and Executive Producer, Howard Gordon 5

FX announced today it has ordered a 13-episode second season of its highly charged drama series, Tyrant. I have been waiting for this news since season one wrapped with Jamal (Ashraf Barhom) imprisoning his brother Barry (Adam Rayner) after finding out about his planned coup to overthrow him in “Gone Fishing.” So, will Jamal go ahead with his threat to kill Barry? I guess we’ll just have to wait until summer of 2015 to find out.

“Volchek” is a great episode with the usual stellar storytelling and acting we’ve come to love and expect from Ray Donovan. It also does a terrific job of furthering everyone’s story lines.

Red Band Society Series Premiere – “Pilot” Spoiler-Free Advance Review. A Coming of Age Dramedy. 9

Red Band Society takes its name from the red hospital bracelets the kids wear. The first half of the season premiere is very lighthearted and funny despite the seriousness of the show’s premise. There is plenty of drama as well and combined, it makes for a very entertaining, heartfelt, coming-of-age tale. I’m sure some people won’t want to watch a show with such a maudlin topic but they’ll be missing out on a wonderful show that takes you on a journey with each character as they grow and learn about themselves. Red Band Society is a unique show with the potential to become a terrific new series for Fox. By the end of “Pilot,” you find yourself wanting to know what makes the characters tick.

Ray Donovan – “Snowflake” Recap. To Tell or Not to Tell.

Ray Donovan - "Snowflake" Recap. To Tell or Not to Tell. 11

“Snowflake” is a compelling episode that leaves a lot to be resolved. While I think the Marvin/Bridget story line is over, I wonder if it really is. With Ray dumping Bridget’s bloody clothes in a dumpster, has he paved the way for the cops to find out the truth? And with Mickey paying Cherry (Jeryl Prescott Sales) to distract Boris (Nick Gracer), the marijuana shop security guard, as only she can do with that talented mouth of hers, does that mean he and Shorty (Steph DuVall) will go ahead with their planned robbery of the store? Will they both end up in jail? Also, will Bunchy’s problems with Patty and Clifford spell the end of their relationship? More importantly, will Bunchy ever be able to sustain a normal relationship with a woman? Perhaps the most important question I have is how will Bridget ever recuperate from last week’s devastation? I know time heals all wounds but still… And last but not least, will Ray and Abby ever be able to repair their marriage?

Ray Donovan – “Sunny” Top Three Moments. From Bad to Worse.

“Sunny” does a good job of furthering everyone’s story lines—some ending and some continuing—as we near the end of season two of Ray Donovan. I’m not sorry Bridget’s first love is over; maybe now, she’ll stop lying and listen to her parents for a change. She certainly has her eyes opened for her, doesn’t she? Now that Kate knows Ray lied to her, it’s only a matter of time before she uncovers the truth. But will she be allowed to do that? The truth could cost some people very dearly if it ever comes to light. With Terry returning his paychecks to Harriet (Jayne Taini), will he and Frances (Brooke Smith) take off for Ireland? And as far as Abby and Ray are concerned, do you think they’re headed for divorce? Is that what Abby wants or has she perhaps taken her relationship with Jim a bit too far?

Tyrant Season Finale – “Gone Fishing” Retrospective. What If?

Tyrant Season Finale - "Gone Fishing" Retrospective. What If? 12

If you were expecting a lot of fireworks in the season finale of Tyrant, you’ll be disappointed. There are no fireworks at all. For that matter, no one even raises their voice. I know writers Howard Gordon and Chris Keyser could have done a better job. The cliffhanger isn’t even a proper cliffhanger as we all know there’s no way Jamal is going to execute Barry. Unless, of course, Rayner wants off the show next season. All in all, as season finales go, “Gone Fishing” is a huge disappointment for me.

Ray Donovan – “Walk This Way” Top Five Moments. Happy Birthday, Conor.

Ray Donovan – “Walk This Way” Top Five Moments. Happy Birthday, Conor. 13

“Walk This Way” is Liev Schreiber’s first attempt at directing a TV show and outside of one scene, he does a fairly good job. I don’t particularly care for the way Schreiber shoots Ray stumbling down the stairs at the party. But, even though Schreiber succeeds as a director, unfortunately, “Walk This Way” doesn’t really do it for me.

Tyrant – “Gaslight” Retrospective. The Seeds of Doubt.

Tyrant - "Gaslight" Retrospective. The Seeds of Doubt. 14

As Tyrant’s penultimate episode, “Gaslight” does a wonderful job of setting up next week’s finale. Kudos to Chris Levinson for the story he tells in this episode, which is not only beautifully written but acted. Everyone, from Barry to Yussef to Ziad, in particular, elevates their acting as they all strive to make Jamal believe Tariq is trying to oust him from power. With Molly’s last words to Barry, one can only assume he will think hard about his past and future decisions.

Tyrant – “Meet the New Boss” Retrospective. Surprises and More Surprises. 18

I know in my review of “Preventative Medicine,” I said the episode was a huge turning point for Tyrant, but that’s because I hadn’t yet seen “Meet the New Boss.” There are so many twists and turns, and surprise revelations I never saw coming. What a game changing episode! People’s allegiances are changing willy-nilly, as are personalities. As the freshman season of Tyrant draws to a close, “Meet the New Boss” does an excellent job of setting up the remaining two episodes.

Ray Donovan – “Irish Spring” Top Three Moments Recap. 19

Following Conor’s (Devon Bagby) suspension from school for pushing his friend Alex (Garrett Boyd) down the stairs, Ray (Liev Schreiber) finally finds the time to take Conor to Alex’s house to apologize to both him and his father Barry (Shane Blades). But Barry acts like a complete asshole so Ray takes Conor home, lesson unlearned. Avi (Steven Bauer) is following Kate (Vinessa Shaw) to keep her from digging too deep but she’s a hard woman to keep up with. Mickey’s (Jon Voigt) parole officer Ronald Keith (Wendell Pierce) informs Ray of Mickey’s kidnapping, and Ray learns some noteworthy information about Cochran (Hank Azaria) from his FBI snitch Frank Barnes (Michael McGrady). Meanwhile, Abby (Paula Malcomson) tries to have fun with her prospective Trousdale neighbors now that she’s in her dream house but that blows up in her face. Bridget’s (Kerris Dorsey) boyfriend Marvin (Octovius J. Johnson) takes her to a party at the house of hip-hop mogul Cookie Brown (Omar J. Dorsey). But the big question on everyone’s mind is where the hell is Mickey?

In my review of last week’s episode, I told you Jamal had killed Sheik Rashid (Mohammed Bakri) to ensure his election. Tyrant – “What the World Needs Now” Retrospective. A Leopard Can’t Change Its Spots.

Tyrant – “What the World Needs Now” Retrospective. A Leopard Can’t Change Its Spots. 25

Given the events of “What the World Needs Now,” I wonder if Ihab (Alexander Karim) will heed his father’s very telling words. If you are a child of the 60s, you know what the title of this week’s episode of Tyrant refers to. First recorded in 1965, “What the World Needs Now is Love” was written and composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and speaks to what is needed if peace is ever to become a reality in Abbudin, especially for President Jamal Al-Fayeed (Ashraf Barhom). It is most apropos considering what’s been going on in Israel and the Ukraine these past few weeks. How do the writers do that?
