News: Showtime Renews Both Homeland and The Affair

News: Showtime Renews Both Homeland and The Affair 8

As an avid fan and weekly reviewer of both Homeland and The Affair, today’s news couldn’t have made me happier. Showtime has renewed Homeland for a fifth season, and The Affair for a second season, with 12 and 10 episodes respectively to air in 2015.

Homeland – “Redux” Retrospective. Full Circle.

Homeland – “Redux” Retrospective. Full Circle. 9

Homeland has spent the majority of this season trying to recreate itself following two seasons of not-so-great ratings, specifically by giving us a Carrie Mathison who seems to have her head on straight…Now, in “Redux,” due to a sneaky switch in medications, Carrie becomes paranoid, giving us bipolar Carrie 1.0 once again—something I thought we wouldn’t see since it failed to work in any other season than the first.

The Affair – “105” Review. The Victim is Revealed.

The Affair – “105” Review. The Victim is Revealed. 10

Color me shocked! We’re only halfway through the season and we already know who the “victim” is. That leaves five more episodes to figure out who the killer is, if, in fact, there is a killer. Could creator/writer Sarah Treem be that sneaky that this whole thing will turn out to be an accident? Now that would be a twist for the ages!

The Affair – “104” Review. The Web We Weave.

The Affair – “104” Review. The Web We Weave. 12

“104” is the most honest episode of The Affair to date. It pulls no punches in furthering Alison and Noah’s story line. “104” takes The Affair from being the tale of a sordid affair to the genesis of a true love story.

Homeland – “From A to B and Back Again” Review. Trust No One but Yourself.

Homeland – “From A to B and Back Again” Review. Trust No One but Yourself. 13

Oh. My. God. Or, as Quinn (Rupert Friend) puts it, “Holy fuck!” What a game changer this week’s installment of Homeland is! I cannot believe what I just watched. Episodic writer Chip Johannessen doesn’t pull any punches with “From A to B and Back Again.”

Showtime’s Programming Overview for 2014-15 TV Season

Showtime's Programming Overview for 2014-15 TV Season 14

I love the winter season of TV shows on Showtime. There’s Shameless, House of Lies, Episodes, and Web Therapy, to name a few of the returning series for 2015. Below are the premiere dates for these highly popular series, as well as Showtime’s upcoming comedy and documentary specials for late fall 2014.

The Affair – “103” Review. A Man in Charge.

The Affair – “103” Review. A Man in Charge. 15

This week’s installment of The Affair doesn’t further Noah (Dominic West) and Alison’s (Ruth Wilson) affair much although it does examine their relationship at this point of Detective Jeffries’ (Victor Williams) questioning. Instead, it delves into the history of a long-standing feud between the Solloway and Hodge families. Oscar Hodge (Darren Goldstein), Alison’s boss at The Lobster Roll, doesn’t particularly care for Alison’s husband Cole (Joshua Jackson), and “103” provides some insight into why.

Homeland – “About a Boy” Review. There’s More Than One Way to Skin a Cat.

Homeland – “About a Boy” Review. There’s More Than One Way to Skin a Cat. 16

“About a Boy” really is about a boy; almost the entire hour is spent with Carrie (Claire Dane) doing her best to get Aayan (Suraj Sharma) to admit his uncle, Haissam Haqqani (Numan Acar), the terrorist leader who was killed by a CIA air strike in Homeland’s season premiere, is actually alive and well. It was a real shocker to see him hugging Aayan last week in “Iron in the Fire.”

Photos and What’s Next on Jane the Virgin

Photos and What's Next on Jane the Virgin 17

Last week, I discovered The CW’s new comedy series, Jane the Virgin. I couldn’t believe how much I laughed throughout the show. The series is based on the telenovela Juana la Virgen, and revolves around 23-year-old Jane (Gina Rodriguez) who becomes pregnant after mistakenly being artificially inseminated by her distracted gynecologist. Unfortunately, Jane has a boyfriend, Michael (Brett Dier), …

Guess Who’s Coming Back to The Real Housewives of New York!

Guess Who's Coming Back to The Real Housewives of New York! 19

If you don’t know by now, I’m crazy for my Real Housewives … from Atlanta to Beverly Hills, and from New Jersey to New York. And, as disappointed as I was that Bethenny Frankel’s talk show Bethenny didn’t succeed, that’s as happy as I am about the news that she’s rejoining The Real Housewives of New York for season seven of the hit reality series.

The Affair – “102” Review. Jam, Fish, and Horsies, Oh My!

The Affair – “102” Review. Jam, Fish, and Horsies, Oh My! 20

“102” does an excellent job of furthering The Affair’s main story line, giving us important character development and backstories. The cinematography, in particular, is breathtaking, especially in the opening sequence. The Affair’s writers have stepped up their game, making Noah and Alison more relatable and easy to form a connection with. I was completely engrossed in the entire episode and at the end of the hour, I was left wanting more…much, much more.

The Affair Season Premiere – “101” Review. Two Differing Viewpoints.

The Affair Season Premiere – “101” Review. Two Differing Viewpoints. 23

The salacious side of me is responsible for me watching Showtime’s new drama, The Affair. I was expecting a fun, sexy look at an affair between two married people but it is not at all what I expected. The Affair is a somber tale of what happens when two people, who are supposedly in love with their spouses, meet at a diner in Montauk, Long Island and begin a romantic affair. What drives them to it and where it ends hopefully will make The Affair another big hit for Showtime.

Homeland – “Shalwar Kameez” Review. Carrie 2.0.

Homeland – “Shalwar Kameez” Review. Carrie 2.0. 24

“Shalwar Kameez” does a good job of moving this season’s story lines ahead, and cementing Homeland as appointment TV once again.

Satisfaction Renewed for a Second Season

Satisfaction Renewed for a Second Season 25

I’ve been having fun watching Satisfaction’s Neil Truman (Matt Passmore) and his wife Grace (Stephanie Szostak) do the marriage dance with the help, so to speak, of Adriana (Katherine LaNasa) and Simon (Blair Redford). So, after watching the shocking cliffhanger that closed out season one, I’ve been anxiously waiting to find out whether Satisfaction would be renewed. I’m happy to say it is.

Homeland – “The Drone Queen” & “Trylon and Perisphere” Season Premiere Review. Carrie is Back, Better than Ever.

Homeland – “The Drone Queen” & “Trylon and Perisphere” Season Premiere Review. Carrie is Back, Better than Ever. 26

Homeland is back and it’s better than ever. Sharp writing, great cinematography, superior acting by all, and terrific direction by Lesli Linka Glatter in episode one and Keith Gordon in episode two. So far, I’d say Homeland is, once again, an exciting, tension-filled series worth watching.

Ray Donovan Season 2 Finale – “The Captain” Review. Full Circle.

Ray Donovan Season 2 Finale – “The Captain” Review. Full Circle. 27

There is no doubt “The Captain” is the most explosive, intense, riveting season finale I’ve ever seen. It is so captivating, I have already watched it twice so as not to miss one single word. Most shows end their seasons with cliffhangers to ensure their viewers return for the new season. Such is not the case with “The Captain.” It stands on its own, and if you’re a true ‘Donofan,’ like I am, you’ll be back next season to find out where our characters go next.
