Casting News: Ian McShane Joins the Third Season of Showtime's Ray Donovan 5

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – “Rule 17: Ask the Answer Lady!” Review. Tellin’ It Like It Is.

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – “Rule 17: Ask the Answer Lady!” Review. Tellin’ It Like It Is. 6

The combination of comedic and dramatic scenes is what Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce (#GG2D) does extremely well. In “Rule 17: Ask the Answer Lady!” (“Rule 17”), Director Brian Dannelly knows exactly when to mix humor into an otherwise serious scene, and when not to. As a matter of fact, the very first scene of “Rule 17” is total comedy at its best and had me laughing out loud from the first shot.

Shameless – “I’m the Liver” Retrospective. Babies and Boys and Problems, Oh My!

Shameless – “I’m the Liver” Retrospective. Babies and Boys and Problems, Oh My! 7

Episodic writer Krista Vernoff provides some of the best, most witty dialogue in this week’s installment of Shameless. If I have one complaint about “I’m the Liver,” it’s the pacing. The episode switches from scene to scene, story line to story line so quickly, you barely have time to digest what you’ve just seen before another story line pops up. I mean, some scenes contain only one or two lines of dialogue! Other than that, “I’m the Liver” is an extremely entertaining episode.

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – “Rule 67: Don’t Kill the Princess” Retrospective. It’s Complicated.

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – “Rule 67: Don’t Kill the Princess” Retrospective. It’s Complicated. 8

“Rule 67” has the usual superb acting we’ve come to expect, especially in the scenes with Edelstein and Adelstein. They have great onscreen chemistry. Director Daisy Von Scherler Mayer gives us perfection with her direction of the characters and scenes. I love the way she positions Phoebe when Ralf goes to get the necklace, and then shows the disappointment on her face while bathing it in sunlight.

Shameless Season 5 Premiere – “Milk of the Gods” Retrospective. The Gang Is Back! 9

“Milk of the Gods” is another great season premiere of Shameless. Filled with the terrific acting we’ve come to expect from the cast, as well as sharp and witty dialogue, “Milk of the Gods” doesn’t disappoint. It gives us all the raunchy and shameless things we love about this wild and dysfunctional family, and sets up the new season perfectly.

Homeland – “Long Time Coming” Retrospective. Back on U.S. Soil..

Homeland - "Long Time Coming" Retrospective. Back on U.S. Soil.. 15

As the final episode of season four of Homeland, “Long Time Coming” is a nice tribute to James Rebhorn, although it’s rather disappointing both as a season finale and as a setup for next season. After a season filled with suspense, riveting scenes, and edge-of-your-seat moments, I was bored by the way the writers chose to end the various story lines

The Affair – “110” Retrospective. A Perfect Setup.

The Affair - "110" Retrospective. A Perfect Setup. 16

Kudos to Treem for penning such an in-depth look at what happens when a spouse strays. Throw in a good murder mystery and you have an Emmy worthy show, in my opinion. The acting has been superb all season long; the cinematography and direction have been outstanding; and the dialogue so intense and captivating, it has been difficult to tear my eyes from the TV screen for more than a minute. The same can be said for The Affair’s season finale. All we can do now is wait for next year, something that won’t be easy for me. How about you?

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – “Rule 47: Always Take Advantage of “Me” Time” Retrospective. Pity Party.

Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce - "Rule 47: Always Take Advantage of "Me" Time" Retrospective. Pity Party. 17

Rule 47: Take Advantage of “Me” Time” is another hilarious episode of GG2D. Although, Noxon certainly is an expert at knowing exactly when and how to utilize the episode’s more serious moments to her advantage. I can’t wait to see where GG2D takes us next. Will Jake and Becca stay together? Will Abby conquer the topic of “menopause?”

Homeland – “Krieg Nicht Lieb” Retrospective. Revenge.

Homeland – “Krieg Nicht Lieb” Retrospective. Revenge. 18

As penultimate episodes go, “Krieg Nicht Lieb” is a tad disappointing. While it does have some exciting, suspenseful moments, it’s short—like last week’s episode—to the tune of lasting only 45 minutes. Also, it’s a filler episode at best, even with its compelling moments. “Krieg Nicht Lieb” leaves us with too many questions unanswered, most importantly how will the Haqqani story line end?

The Affair – “109” Retrospective. Trouble in Paradise.

The Affair – “109” Retrospective. Trouble in Paradise. 19

“109” is one of the best penultimate episodes I’ve seen in quite a while. The acting is exceptional, the writing is outstanding, and the directing spot on, to say nothing of how dazzling the cinematography is. The word “compelling” doesn’t even begin to describe this episode. I couldn’t tear my eyes from the screen for one single, solitary moment.

Showtime Receives Nine Golden Globe® Noms This Year 20

THE AFFAIR is the only first year series to have a lead actor, lead actress and drama series nomination, and is tied for the most nominations for a television series this year with three noms. An outstanding eight SHOWTIME actors were nominated this morning, the most series actor nominations of any network (cable or broadcast), including noms for Homeland’s Claire Danes, Ray Donovan’s Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight, Nurse Jackie’s Edie Falco, House of Lies’ Don Cheadle and Shameless’ William H. Macy. SHOWTIME has the most series nominations of any network.

Fans of FX’s miniseries, Fargo, have been eager for news of where the second installment will take them, and who will star. Today, the network announced Golden Globe® award nominated actress Kirsten Dunst and Breaking Bad’s Jesse Plemon have signed on to the award-winning miniseries, which will unfold over ten episodes in the fall of 2015.

Luke Wilson and Imogen Poots to Star in Showtime’s New Comedy, Roadies

Luke Wilson and Imogen Poots to Star in Showtime's New Comedy, Roadies 22

Showtime’s new one-hour comedy series Roadies sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into a successful rock band tour as told by the all important crew members, or “roadies” as they’re known in the industry. Luke Wilson and Imogen Poots are set to star in the comedy pilot, and Keisha Castle-Hughes and Peter Cambor will join the ensemble cast. Oscar winner Cameron Crowe wrote, and will direct and executive produce the pilot (for a potential series). Roadies begins shooting in Vancouver on January 19, 2015 at North Shore Studios.

Homeland – “13 Hours in Islamabad” Retrospective. The Body Count.

Homeland – “13 Hours in Islamabad” Retrospective. The Body Count. 23

From the moment “13 Hours in Islamabad” begins, you know you’re in for one hell of a ride. To say this episode is tension-filled is putting it mildly. The first half hour is pulse pounding, with non-stop action, while the remaining 15 minutes (yes, that’s right; the episode is only 45 minutes long) deal with the emotional reactions to what happened.

The Affair – “108” Review. The Two Lovers Reunite.

The Affair – “108” Review. The Two Lovers Reunite. 24

Noah (Dominic West) heads to Montauk again, this time to represent the family at a literary award ceremony for his father-in-law Bruce (John Doman). Meanwhile, Alison (Ruth Wilson) deals with her grandmother Joan’s (Lynn Cohen) hospitalization and with Noah’s help, comes to an uncomfortable realization that helps her deal with the situation at hand. Sooner rather than later, you know our two lovers are going to run into each other. Will they keep their promises to their respective spouses?

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – “Rule 23: Never Lie to the Kids” Review. Things Are Not What They Seem.

Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce - "Rule 23: Never Lie to the Kids" Review. Things Are Not What They Seem. 25

It’s safe to say Bravo has a real hit on its hands. GG2D is full of sharp, witty dialogue, great acting, is funny when it needs to be, and dramatic when necessary. It’s also sexy, intelligent, and dark. GG2D is the complete package; you’ll be missing out on something special if you don’t have this new dramedy on your list of appointment TV.

The Affair – “107” Review. Confessions Can Be Cathartic.

The Affair – “107” Review. Confessions Can Be Cathartic. 26

Captivating. Heartbreaking. Surprising. These are the words that best describe “107,” the latest installment of Showtime’s hit new series, The Affair. In last week’s episode, Detective Jeffries (Victor Williams) disclosed the victim in our murder tale was Scotty Lockhart (Colin Donnell). I love how he just slipped that into the conversation, as if it weren’t a big reveal. Now, as summer’s end approaches, and the Solloways leave for home, Noah (Dominic West) and Alison (Ruth Wilson) confess their sins to their respective spouses, although for different reasons. And while episodic writer Kate Robin may be leading us to believe illicit narcotics play a role in Scotty’s (Colin Donnell) death, I have a theory of my own that has nothing to do with drugs.

Homeland – “There’s Something Else Going On” Retrospective. Live or Die.

Homeland – “There’s Something Else Going On” Retrospective. Live or Die. 27

“There’s Something Else Going On” moves the story lines ahead beautifully while providing some interesting character studies of both Saul and Dennis. The two men couldn’t be more opposite if they tried. Patinkin and Moses provide top-notch acting, as do Danes, Robins, and O’Keefe, along with some stellar writing. With only three episodes left in the season, and with the ending of the episode, I can’t help wondering where Homeland is going next.
