The Americans – “Walter Taffet” Retrospective. The Best Laid Plans.

The Americans - "Walter Taffet" Retrospective. The Best Laid Plans. 1

As a first-time director of The Americans, Emmerich does a fantastic job with “Walter Taffet.” Wisely, he puts himself in only a few scenes so he can concentrate on the job at hand. With terrific editing and superior acting, “Walter Taffet” is the episode I’ve been waiting for. It has plenty of suspense and intrigue, and even a bit of humor (“Hi, honey!”).

War it is in “Uncle Carl.” With Frank (William H. Macy) lying to Sammi (Emily Bergl) about her trailer in “Rite of Passage,” Sammi withholding Frank’s anti-rejection medications in “Crazy Love,” and then shooting him in “Tell Me You Fucking Need Me,” let me tell you, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Their incessant need to win leads Frank and Sammi into an all-out War of the Roses.

All that aside, Rhys and Russell turn in some of their most convincing acting in “Born Again,” as does Mahendru. That in itself is what keeps me coming back week after week.

Shameless – “Tell Me You Fucking Need Me” Retrospective. Relationships. 6

“Tell Me You Fucking Need Me” is Macy’s first time directing an episode of #Shameless, and he does a great job, particularly with Fiona, Mickey, and Ian’s (Cameron Monaghan) scene in the psychiatric hospital…Macy does a terrific job with this scene, specifically by playing up the noise from the ping pong table, and making the audience feel what Ian is feeling.

Pardon me, but I can’t start my review until I finish eating all the Jiffy Pop™ and Rocky Road ice cream in my house. Lord, this episode gave me the munchies, which isn’t necessarily a good thing. Although, my snacks took my mind off how bored I was watching “Salang Pass.”

Shameless – “Crazy Love” Retrospective. Dilemmas Galore. 14

Writer John Wells has obviously done his homework to provide such an in-depth look at bi-polar disorder in the aptly titled “Crazy Love.” Cameron Monaghan has too as he steals every scene he’s in. It is incredibly heartbreaking to watch as Ian says goodbye to his loved ones before entering a treatment facility.

Conference Call Transcript - Annet Mahendru Talks About Her Role as Nina on The Americans 16

I love participating in and reading the transcripts of conference calls with my favorite actors. Annet Mahendru is no exception as she provides great insight into Nina, the Russian spy character she plays on FX’s critically acclaimed series, #TheAmericans.

The Americans – “Open House” Retrospective.

The Americans - "Open House" Retrospective. 17

Director Thomas Schlamme knows exactly how to convey emotions without a single word of dialogue. First, with “The Star Spangled Banner” playing in the background, Schlamme uses a tender kiss to portray the love the Jennings have for each other. Then, in a rather squeamish scene where Philip deals with Elizabeth’s dental problem, the camera darts back and forth between Philip and Elizabeth’s eyes, conveying the trust and love between them. This is direction at its best.

<Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce - "Rule No. 46: Keep the Holidays Low Key" 18

Ghosts are front and center in this week’s installment of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce (#GG2D). So is the realization of what family means for more than one character. We are also witness to a rather volatile Thanksgiving celebration in “Rule No. 46: Keep the Holidays Low Key” (“Rule 46”) that teaches a lesson to more than one person.

Shameless - "Rite of Passage" Retrospective. Reality Can Be a Bitch. 19

Generally speaking, “Rite of Passage” is a very entertaining episode. Writer Etan Frankel does a good job with the dialogue, especially between Fiona and Gus, Fiona and Lip, and Frank and Laura. I also enjoy how much Debbie and Carl are connecting, working together on their various schemes.

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – “Rule No. 3: Don’t Stand in the Doorway” Retrospective. Facing Your Fears. 22

“Rule No. 3: Don’t Stand in the Doorway” does a great job of addressing the fears in all of us. From the simplest—Charlie’s fear of the dark—to the more serious—Delia’s fear of commitment, and Abby’s avoidance of Will (Warren Christie), everyone faces their worst fears in “Rule No. 3.”

Shameless – “A Night to Remem-Wait, What?” Review. Easy Come, Easy Go

Shameless - "A Night to Remem-Wait, What?" Review. Easy Come, Easy Go 23

“A Night to Remem-Wait, What?” is, without a doubt, the best episode of the season so far. Episodic writer Davey Holmes outdoes himself with the ongoing story lines and brilliant dialogue. The episode revolves mainly around Fiona and Frank, and both Rossum and Macy steal almost every scene they’re in.

The Americans Season 3 Premiere – “EST Men” Review. The Saga Continues.

The Americans Season 3 Premiere – “EST Men” Review. The Saga Continues. 25

“EST Men” unfortunately lacks the suspense, intensity, and passion that was so prevalent in previous seasons, except for the opening scene, which had me holding my breath. That is not to say I didn’t enjoy the season premiere, as I did. “EST Men” is too busy setting up the third season of The Americans to include the same level of action sequences we’ve seen before. It would be unreasonable to expect that. I’m sure there will be plenty of edge-of-your-seat scenes to thrill us as the season moves forward.

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce – “Rule 32: F-You, Rob Frumpkis!” Retrospective. Lessons Learned. 26

I can always tell when Noxon puts on her writer’s cap—I find myself with an idiotic Cheshire grin on my face throughout the majority of the episode. “Rule 32” fits the bill, particularly during Edelstein and Christie’s scenes together. They have such amazing chemistry onscreen, I could almost close my eyes and feel the emotions bouncing off them. Of course, director Robert Duncan McNeill deserves kudos for the way he sets up the scenes.

Interview with Matthew Rhys, One of the Stars of FX's Critically Acclaimed Political Thriller, The Americans 27
