Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.

Review: Amazon’s Carnival Row Series Premiere – An Expertly Crafted World Full of Wonder and Terror

Carnival Row key art (featured)

Carnival Row is an expertly crafted fantasy series full of wonder and terror. The imaginative world, originally written as a screenplay, has been brought to life in an episodic series that allows the characters more room to frolic and play. After watching the first episode, “Some Dark God Wakes,” you are immediately transported into a new realm of reality where everything feels familiar but slightly askew.

Review: On Becoming A God In Central Florida Series Premiere – A Comical Drama Worth Watching

On Becoming a God In Central Florida key art - Showtime (featured)

Wrapped in saccharin-laced honesty, On Becoming A God In Central Florida is a show you didn’t know you needed to watch. Filled with shockingly accurate depictions of the underbelly of a pyramid scheme, On Becoming A God In Central Florida centers on Krystal Stubbs (Kirsten Dunst) and how the “Founders American Merchandise (FAM)” ruins her life. Or does it?

SHOWTIME has announced that Paco Cabezas (PENNY DREADFUL, The Alienist) is set to direct multiple episodes of PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS, the next chapter of the PENNY DREADFUL saga. Oscar® nominee John Logan, creator, writer and executive producer of the Emmy nominated series PENNY DREADFUL, will continue in those same roles. Production on the drama series is expected to begin later this year. A spiritual descendant of the original PENNY DREADFUL story set in Victorian-era London, the next chapter opens in 1938 Los Angeles; a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, a detective is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.

Review: TNT’s I Am the Night Limited Series. Provocative, Macabre, and Addictive! 5

I Am the Night is based on the true events of Fauna Hodel (India Eisley). The series is provocative, macabre, and addictive! I couldn’t stop watching. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart or those with weak stomachs. There is plenty of darkness and mystery surrounding the sensational Black Dahlia murder and more.

A Discovery of Witches Season 1 Review. Wonderful Adaptation From Book to Screen

A Discovery of Witches - temp key art S1 (featured)

Whether you have read the books or not, A Discovery of Witches stands on its own merits as an amazing series with great acting, luscious scenery, drama, magic, and of course, romance.
The casting couldn’t have been more spot on for both Diana and Matthew. Teresa Palmer is Diana Bishop. Goode is Matthew Clairmont through and through.
There are small nuances that slightly differ from the book, but thankfully the core story arcs and main plot points are wonderfully explored and brought to vivid life.

Movie Review: Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle – Visually Stunning and Entertaining But Missing Something.

Movie Review: Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle – Visually Stunning and Entertaining But Missing Something. 9

lthough the novel, “The Jungle Book,” has been made and remade into a movie many times over, what Andy Serkis does in Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle is both captivating and visually appealing. The live action between man and animal is enchanting. Newcomer Rohan Chand is brilliant as the “man-cub” Mowgli. His seamless interaction with all the animals of the jungle is outstanding. While I did enjoy the story, I felt something was lacking throughout the movie. I still can’t pinpoint what that missing ingredient is but I will say, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle does leave an impression.

Movie Review: Can You Ever Forgive Me – A Darkly Comedic and Introspective Film.

Movie Review: Can You Ever Forgive Me – A Darkly Comedic and Introspective Film. 11

Can You Ever Forgive Me is an engrossing drama sprinkled with dark comedic moments and plenty of sarcasm. There is also tremendous sadness, especially regarding Lee Israel who is played with the utmost aplomb by Melissa McCarthy. As Lee, McCarthy transforms herself into an unapologetic asshole of a human being. The way McCarthy carries herself in Can You Ever Forgive Me highlights what a magnificently talented actress she is. Her portrayal of Lee Israel is vastly different from the slap-stick and physically comedic roles she’s played in films like Bridesmaids and Spy, and I loved it.

The Rookie Series Premiere – “Pilot” Review. A Rough Start With Potential

The Rookie Series Premiere – “Pilot” Review. A Rough Start With Potential 12

The thing I love and hate about series premieres is how much they pack into a single episode. I love the amount of information I’m getting but I don’t always like how it’s packaged. Sometimes, things about a character need to unfold slowly while others need to be unveiled immediately to help you understand the reason behind the story. While I enjoyed most of The Rookie’s premiere, dubbed simply “Pilot,” there is room for improvement. I will continue to watch because I absolutely adore Nathan Fillion who plays the lead character, John Nolan.

Movie Review: Sadie. A Revelation! It’s Dark, Intense, and Full of Angst.

Movie Review: Sadie. A Revelation! It’s Dark, Intense, and Full of Angst. 13

Though the title of this film may sound benign, the contents within Sadie are far from it. Writer and director Megan Griffiths gives the audience a visceral and eye-opening look from an adolescent’s perspective on everyday situations in an adult-centric world. Some scenes may be shocking for some, however; the way Sadie is written, there is no room for sugar-coating anything. The performance by young actress Sophia Mitri Schloss in the title role of Sadie is award worthy. Schloss’ portrayal of a teenager who’s caught between childhood and puberty is outstanding. While Sadie possesses some childlike qualities, she’s also on the cusp of becoming a dark and cynical human being.

Movie Review: Loving Pablo. An Addictive and Turbulent Kind of Love Story.

Movie Review: Loving Pablo. An Addictive and Turbulent Kind of Love Story. 15

Admittedly, I had preconceived notions about Loving Pablo. There aren’t many who don’t know about the notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar. But many may not have known about his torrid liaison with Virginia Vallejo (Penélope Cruz). Thinking the film would highlight Virginia’s perspective regarding her affair with Pablo Escobar ((Javier Bardem), I was pleasantly surprised at how much Loving Pablo focuses on Pablo’s Medellín Cartel cocaine business. I truly enjoyed the film. It’s engaging, exciting, horrifying, and narcissistic, with a sprinkle of passion thrown in for good measure. The main focal points are Virginia and her working with DEA Agent Shepard (Peter Sarsgaard), Virginia and her affair with Pablo, and Pablo dealing with the price of being the most hated and feared man in Colombia.

Movie Review: The Old Man and the Gun. The Most Charming Robber Ever.

Movie Review: The Old Man and the Gun. The Most Charming Robber Ever. 16

The Old Man and the Gun is a captivating, endearing, and surprisingly amusing film. For lack of a better word, it’s delightfully charming. There are actors and then there is Robert Redford. He can charm the clothes right off your back if you’re not careful (not that I think he would do that). As Forrest Tucker in The Old Man and the Gun, Redford absolutely steals the show with his charismatic smile and subtle compliments. Even when he’s robbing you, and then tells you, “You’re doing a great job,” I imagine I probably would have given him the money too. While director David Lowery admits the real true story is much “grittier” than the film portrays, The Old Man and The Gun is one of the most charming robbery films I’ve seen. I cannot recall another movie where the bank robber was more captivating. Redford’s portrayal not only steals the film, he cements himself, once again, as a timeless heartthrob.

Movie Review: I Think We’re Alone Now. The Apocalypse With A Twist.

Movie Review: I Think We’re Alone Now. The Apocalypse With A Twist. 17

Sometimes you watch a film that completely catches you off guard. Such is the case with I Think We’re Alone Now. I had a preconceived notion of what I thought this movie would be – a story of a loner who falls in love with a girl he meets unexpectedly in a post-apocalyptic setting, but I was wrong; well, sort of. There is a deeper message embedded within the film but I’m sure everyone will walk away with their own interpretation. I’ll tell you mine…at the end, of course. I Think We’re Alone Now is a surprisingly entertaining film, especially since there is minimal dialogue, very little special effects outside of how decayed and emaciated the bodies appear, and a very rustic feeling. If you’re looking for an interesting film with two truly outstanding performances by the lead actors, then you must watch I Think We’re Alone Now.
