The Strain is disgustingly fantastic! I said these very same words to the series’ Co-Creator/Executive Producer/Director Guillermo del Toro and Show Runner/Executive Producer/Writer Carlton Cuse on a conference call Wednesday, July 9, 2014. The Strain is a visually stimulating and visceral series. The production value and cinematography are film quality. It’s as if you are watching a one hour movie – a damn good movie to boot. The series premiere, “Night Zero,” sets up what will be an intense first season, beginning with an unknown contagion that brings a Regis “767 wide body” air jet, and all its passengers and crew to a dead stop.

Anticipating what could possibly top the frightening events that transpired in the penultimate episode, “Possession,” had me speculating and reassessing several points of view I have had about the characters throughout the entire season. The season finale, “Grand Guignol,” provides an answer to a certain lingering thought I have had about a certain American sharp shooter, and there are several surprise turns of events, including a change of heart for more than one person.

“Closer Than Sisters” provides a deep insight into Vanessa’s mind as we see how she grew up, her friendship with Mina, and the way Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) and she came to be united in finding Mina who is lost in the shadows. The richness in the story telling is beyond compelling, transfixing you, and transporting you to Vanessa’s childhood home along the seashore. What impresses me most throughout “Closer Than Sisters” is Green’s acting. As Vanessa becomes ill, her seizures, convulsions, and violent outbursts are truly remarkable.
