In the distance, we can see Magda (Natalie Dormer), the Woman in Black, staring straight at Maria. This season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is certainly not lacking in the drama department.

In the opening scene of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, episode five “Children of the Royal Sun,” Elsa (Natalie Dormer) goes into what I can only imagine a singles bar where men and women alike seek the pleasure of one another’s company, among other things. Elsa, as beautiful as she is, finds a man who seems to fit the description of her yet to be seen husband, Mr. Branson. Her statement is quite telling, “I think you want to take me home…and I think you want to hurt me.” And with a Cheshire cat grin, the stage is set.

Set in Los Angeles circa 1938, alternating back and forth to earlier times, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is full of intriguing story arcs that will intersect at some point throughout the season. If you are easily sensitive to racial slurs, racial inequality, or squeamish, this may be a difficult series for you to watch on a weekly basis. For rest of you, it’s worth watching.

The series also stars Shantel VanSanten (The Boys), Sonya Walger (The Librarian: The Quest for the Spear), Chris Bauer (True Blood), Nate Corddry (The Circle), Jeff Branson (Major Crimes), and more!

There is still Headmaster Finch’s (John Malafronte) murder to investigate and we learn more about both Philo’s (Orlando Bloom) and Aisling’s (Erika Stárková) past.

You don’t have to be religious or a believer in order to be captivated by Evil.

With a deep freezer full of meals from the funeral to hold them over, things begin to get real when Wade is down to his last frozen entrée. The Unicorn is only a half-hour, so a wonderful (albeit speedy) montage shows Wade working at his landscaping company, coming home and being with his daughters, walking the dogs, eat-sleep-repeat, until that fateful day arrives when all Wade has left is “Dottie Palmer’s chicken parmesan.”
