Judy Manning

Dream chaser extraordinaire! Judy tends to be a tad sarcastic and kind of goofy! She is an avid admirer of all things supernatural, paranormal, celestial and mystical. She loves to read, write, and watches way too much TV. She enjoys many genres of film and music (and let's be honest, most music from the 80s). She also has a wicked sweet tooth. Cupcakes beware.

Penny Dreadful – “Verbis Diablo” Review. A Sort of Peace.

Penny Dreadful – “Verbis Diablo” Review. A Sort of Peace. 1

Humor doesn’t automatically come to mind when thinking of the dark drama Penny Dreadful; however, it makes quite an unexpected appearance in “Verbis Diablo.” Our lovable British Museum curator, the delightful Ferdinand Lyle played brilliantly by Simon Russell Beale, brings his charisma and knowledge to Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) when he enlists his aide in figuring out the puzzle of the “verbis diablo” language. We also see a familiar face resurface in “Verbis Diablo” when the uniquely handsome Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), abroad in another city, dazzles yet another woman with a secret of her own. Be warned; while “Verbis Diablo” provides a healthy dose of frivolity, sinister deeds take place among the witches—deeds that will have you cowering in a corner wishing for daylight.

Grimm – “Headache” Recap. And So It Begins... 2

The title of this week’s Grimm, “Headache,” takes on a more literal meaning than I anticipated. While a glimmer of Juliette’s (Bitsie Tulloch) humanity peeks through briefly, the Hexenbiest in her reigns supreme. Juliette’s alliance with Kenneth (Nico Evers-Swindell) and the royal family leads to deadly consequences. Meanwhile, Sean (Sasha Roiz) must battle his own demon – Jack is back and ready to paint the town red…blood red.

Syfy and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television Reunite to Develop Brave New World 3

Syfy is reuniting with Emmy® Award-winning Amblin Television to develop a scripted series based on Aldous Huxley’s classic novel Brave New World. Brave New World is set in a world without poverty, war or disease. In this world, humans are given mind-altering drugs, free sex and rampant consumerism are the order of the day, and people no longer reproduce but are genetically engineered in “hatcheries.” Those who won’t conform are forced onto “reservations” – until one of these “savages” challenges the system, threatening the entire social order. First published in 1932, Brave New World was ranked fifth among the 100 best English language novels of the 20th Century by Modern Library.

Castle – “Dead From New York” Recap. The Show Must Go On. 4

A spoof on the NBC hit sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live, Castle’s latest episode, “Dead From New York,” embarks on a murder mystery involving the death of the producer Sid Ross (actor uncredited) of “SNT,” also known as “Saturday Night Tonight.” The list of potential suspects varies, including the current host, a suave and dashing actor named Danny Valentine (guest star Gregory Harrison). And like the real show, there’s always a musical guest and this week’s guest is Carly Rae Jepsen (herself).

Penny Dreadful – “Fresh Hell” Review. Evil Comes This Way. 5

Snow falls gently, blanketing the already white ground beneath Vanessa Ives’ (Eva Green) feet. She walks seemingly without a care, yet each step brings her closer to an old evil that stalks her every move. As “Fresh Hell” begins, so does the terror awaiting Vanessa and her friends. Penny Dreadful comes roaring back with ferocity so intense and deliberate, it takes your breath away. Each calculated minute of this second season premiere has you checking your pulse, anxiously anticipating the next scene. You won’t want to miss a moment of “Fresh Hell.”

Grimm – “You Don’t Know Jack” Recap. The Devil Inside. 6

Suspense, drama, and death are the stars of “You Don’t Know Jack,” and that’s not even the half of it. A killer, long thought dead, comes back to wreak havoc on Portland’s prostitutes. Sound like someone you’ve heard of before? Could “Jack the Ripper” be a Grimm or even a Wesen? Better yet, is it the devil himself possessing someone to do his bidding?

Castle – “In Plane Sight” Recap. Mile High Murder Club. 11

“In Plane Sight” is a great episode to clear our minds after a somewhat dismal showing in last week’s “Sleeper” where we were supposed to learn about Castle’s mysterious disappearance. This week, Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Alexis (Molly C. Quinn) take a mini father/daughter vacation to London but encounter more than turbulence during their flight. When Air Marshal Kyle Ford (Brian Perry) is found dead in the cargo hold, Oceanic Air flight 57’s captain (Lisa Kaminir) asks Castle to step in to help solve the mystery.

News: Syfy Announces 2015 Summer Schedule

News: Syfy Announces 2015 Summer Schedule 14

Syfy continues to roll out an ambitious slate of original programming, with its Summer 2015 programming schedule announced today. The slate includes two new scripted series: Killjoys, from the producers of Orphan Black, and Dark Matter, from the writers of Stargate Atlantis. Also on tap are the new unscripted game show Geeks Who Drink, hosted and executive produced by Zachary Levi; and returning seasons of scripted originals Defiance and Dominion, as well as fan-favorite Face Off. And of course, it wouldn’t be summer without Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, which anchors Syfy’s second annual Sharknado Week this July.

Castle – “Sleeper” Recap. Snooze Button.

Castle – “Sleeper” Recap. Snooze Button. 15

After a long three week hiatus, Castle returns with what is supposed to be an exciting episode highlighting the events leading to Castle’s (Nathan Fillion) disappearance and what transpired in the two months he was gone. While we do get a lot of answers in “Sleeper,” I’m left wanting. Perhaps I’m having a weird dream like Castle’s and this episode isn’t real. Unfortunately, it is. Don’t get me wrong, there are some intriguing turns of events in “Sleeper” that have me questioning exactly where the story goes from Castle’s involvement with a terrorist Al-Qaida threat.

Grimm – “Mishipeshu” Recap. He’s Got Spirit…Animal.

Grimm – “Mishipeshu” Recap. He’s Got Spirit...Animal. 16

Not all fairy tales have happy endings and Grimm is taking the road less traveled in the so-called love story of its main couple, Nick (David Giuntoli) and Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch). Relishing in the darker side of things, the ominous tone the writers and producers are taking with Grimm fascinates me. The only downside of going a bit darker is the pacing. While the intriguing Native American aspect of “Mishipeshu,” this week’s episode, intrigues me, I want the writers to focus more on the saga of the newly turned Hexenbiest Juliette and her journey into the temptations of being a powerful witch.

Video: Interview – The Road Within (Director Gren Wells, Actors Robert Patrick and Robert Sheehan) 17

On a very warm, sunny Tuesday morning, I drove over to West LA for a coveted sit down interview for the newly released film The Road Within all by myself. I didn’t have to share the room with other journalists (who were all sitting in the next room waiting for their turn) – it was just me sitting across from director Gren Wells, and actors Robert Patrick and Robert Sheehan. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. For those of you who know me, when I get nervous, my southern accent comes out.

Movie Review: The Road Within – Different is the New Normal.

Movie Review: The Road Within – Different is the New Normal. 18

Have you ever felt different or feel like you don’t belong? If so, this film shows you that you matter – maybe not to everyone, but you do matter to someone. It only takes one person to show you that are loved to make a big difference. The stories that make up The Road Within aren’t just about the illnesses plaguing our trio. The label of being normal is a stigma our society can’t seem to let go of. What is normal, anyway? The journey Vincent, Alex, and Marie embark on is both a personal and collective one. They learn about themselves through the eyes of others and also discover the ability to control and change their sometimes destructive behavior.

Justified – “The Promise” Review. Goodbye, Harlan.

Justified – “The Promise” Review. Goodbye, Harlan. 19

This isn’t a tear-jerker series finale, that’s for damn sure. If anything, Justified leaves its fans laughing more than anything, throwing in a gasp or two for good measure. What you thought could happen didn’t and what you hoped would happened also probably didn’t. As I’ve said numerous times throughout my reviews of this final season, Justified has become unpredictable; guess the episodes had to stay that way until the very surprising end. People die, and even hats aren’t safe in Harlan. It’s a bittersweet end but we have to say a final goodbye to Harlan County, Kentucky.

Grimm – “Hibernaculum” Recap. Colder Than a Witch’s You Know What.

Grimm – “Hibernaculum” Recap. Colder Than a Witch’s You Know What. 21

Time is of the essence in “Hibernaculum” with strange new Wesen arriving in Portland who freeze their victims, and Hexenbiests gone wild. This week’s installment of Grimm takes us on one helluva ride where reality is becoming blurred and the past has a way of creeping up on some of our beloved characters. From Monroe (Silas Wier Mitchell) reliving the nightmare he endured in “Wesenrein” and “Tribunal,” to Captain Sean Renard (Sasha Roiz) remembering every detail of being shot and having visions of an evil from beyond, things get a bit frightening in “Hibernaculum.”

Video: Interviews – Fox’s Wayward Pines Wonder Con 2015 22

If you haven’t heard of Wayward Pines, then hold on to your sanity because this is one show that will test your nerves. Based on the book series by Blake Crouch, the 10-episode limited series of the same name, Wayward Pines, is reminiscent of shows like Twin Peaks and Happy Town which were both ominous and chilling at times. It also has elements of movies like The Village and Signs in the sense that you aren’t sure if people are who they say they are or if the things that go bump in the night are from this world. Coincidentally, the director of these two films, Oscar® and Golden Globe® nominee M. Night Shyamalan, is one of the executive producers of Wayward Pines and directs an episode.

Video: Interviews – The CW’s The Messengers Wonder Con 2015 23

After watching the screener of the series premiere of #TheMessengers, I was elated to get into the press room to talk with some of the cast of The CW’s new show. The first episode, “Awakening,” introduces us to many of the characters who were “chosen” to be messengers. “Awakening” doesn’t actually confirm or deny these are messengers of God, but when you see the characters’ reflections, they are all angelically winged.

Justified – “Collateral” Review. The Legend of Boyd Crowder Begins.

Justified – “Collateral” Review. The Legend of Boyd Crowder Begins. 24

As penultimate episodes go, especially in a final season, “Collateral” leaves much to be desired. While there are some tense moments, what transpires in “Collateral” sets things up for what should be an explosive series finale. As Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) continues his search for Ava (Joelle Carter), sans his badge, Boyd (Walton Goggins) also pursues his former fiancé. The convergence of two enemies – Raylan and Boyd – happens on a hillside in the dead of night and much is left to chance as each tries to outwit the other. Meanwhile, Avery Markham (Sam Elliott) pays his respects to his dearly departed Katherine (Mary Steenburgen), promising to avenge her death.
