Penny Dreadful – “Good and Evil Braided Be” Review. Ulterior Motives. 3

The title of this episode, “Good and Evil Braided Be,” befits the content. There is light and dark, good and not so good, mingled throughout; however, the tone of “Good and Evil Braided Be” rings more of a filler episode, giving us background on a few characters and providing tidbits of what’s to come. If you are squeamish about blood, there is a scene or two that may cause you a little discomfort.

Penny Dreadful – “Predators Far and Near” Review. Danger Is Closer Than You Think. 9

“Predators Far and Near” certainly ends with a shocking revelation. Two characters that didn’t appear in the season premiere make their entrance as they emerge from a horse drawn carriage. Sir Malcolm and Kaetenay make their way across the ocean to the Americas in hopes of finding Ethan. We learn where the good Dr. Henry Jekyll works when he shows his dear friend Victor Frankenstein exactly what he can do for Lily. And the most intriguing story lines of “Predators Far and Near” revolves around Vanessa, Dr. Seward, and Dr. Alexander Sweet.

Grimm – “Bad Night” Advance Review. What the Heck Is Going On?

Grimm – “Bad Night” Advance Review. What the Heck Is Going On? 10

I can’t be the only Grimm fan out there who is baffled by what’s been happening. The group of Wesens known as “Black Claw” has their hands deep into the proverbial cookie jar that is Portland. I thought Sean (Sasha Roiz) was playing the part to get his daughter Diana (Hannah R. Lloyd) back but unfortunately, he has apparently drunk heavily from the Black Claw Kool-Aid pool and believes in their cause. Has he been brainwashed? The young Diana proves to be more calculating than I imagined. Initially, I believed she had been programmed to follow Black Claw’s beliefs but I’m now wondering whether she’s the one helping them change people’s minds.

TV News: Discovery Channel's SONIC SEA, Narrated by Rachel McAdams, Premieres May 19 14

SONIC SEA travels beneath the ocean’s surface to uncover the damaging consequences of increased ocean noise pollution and what can be done to stop it. Narrated by Academy® Award-nominated actress Rachel McAdams and featuring interviews with marine ecologists, ocean life experts, and wildlife activists, including Grammy Award-winning musician, human rights and environmental activist Sting, SONIC SEA highlights how noise from a range of man-made sources has affected whales in recent years, including the mass stranding of whales around the planet. The film uncovers how better ship design, speed limits for large ships, quieter methods for underwater resource exploration, and exclusion zones for sonar training can work to reduce the noise in our oceans and stop the deaths of our ocean’s beloved creatures, as long as society has “the political will to solve it.”

Grimm – “The Taming of the Wu” Review. Were-Wu of Portland.

Grimm – “The Taming of the Wu” Review. Were-Wu of Portland. 15

The title of my review pays homage to Warren Zevon’s song, “Werewolves of London,” as it runs through my mind. Yes, ladies and gents, what we’ve seen happening to our beloved Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee) these past few episodes finally comes to light for all to see – Wu is a werewolf. “Taming of the Wu” doesn’t just deal with Wu’s transformation after being scratched by an infected Blutbad in “Lycanthropia;” it also delves a bit deeper into the group known as “Black Claw,” and the lengths they are willing to go in order to get certain people on their side. The interesting part of the entire episode is how the young and quite impetuous Diana (Hannah R. Lloyd) behaves when things don’t go her way. Talk about temper tantrums!

Penny Dreadful – “The Day Tennyson Died” Review. Fresh Wonders and Diabolical Secrets. 16

Scattered throughout the Arctic, Africa, London, and the New Mexico Territory, our beloved anti-heroes return to the screen after ten long months. As the title of season three’s premiere suggests, the poet Lord Alfred Tennyson has died. Vanessa (Eva Green), however, is unaware of such news as she has entombed herself in her own wearisome malaise. Some time has passed since the traumatizing events that took place in the season two finale, “And They Were Enemies,” and with all her friends dispersed, Vanessa is unable to lift herself from her doldrums. “The Day Tennyson Died” is layered with five stories dealing with Vanessa, Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and John Clare (Rory Kinnear). Each story reveals something much bigger that lies ahead this season.

Grimm – “Good to the Bone” Review. The Good Son?

Grimm – “Good to the Bone” Review. The Good Son? 19

To be frank, “Good to the Bone” isn’t for the squeamish. If you have any qualms with sound effects involving slurping and/or regurgitating noises, you may find yourself gagging a little as this Wesen story unfolds. Once again, another crime has been committed involving Wesen. It seems Portland is overrun with Wesen that somehow manage to find themselves involved in illegal activity. Did the writers forget that humans still exist in the world? I’m all for introducing new Wesen but now they’ve taken one of my favorite people, Sgt Wu. (Reggie Lee) and have transformed him into something non-human. Wu-Wolf.

Containment – “Pilot” and “I To Die, You To Live” Review. Ignorance Is Not Always Bliss.

Containment – “Pilot” and “I To Die, You To Live” Review. Ignorance Is Not Always Bliss. 22

A viral outbreak can happen. We’ve seen it with the Ebola scare back in 2014, as well as the avian flu (better known as bird flu) and the H1N1 virus (or swine flu). While Ebola has a much higher mortality rate than the bird or swine flus, that doesn’t mean these viruses can’t mutate. What Containment focuses on is the humanity, as well as its cast of characters. While there is a deadly virus looming, Containment revolves around the people and how they survive this ordeal.
Containment, based on the Belgian television series Cordon, takes us on a journey, exploring the state of affairs of a large, well-known U.S. city divided. Can you imagine if this were happening right now – Atlanta split in half, with many of its citizens trapped in the hot zone, cordoned off from family, friends, and loved ones? It’s downright terrifying to fathom.

VIDEO: Interviews with Cast and Executive Producers of The CW's CONTAINMENT At WonderCon 2016 23

The buzz around Containment is good; really good. After watching the first two episodes prior to attending the press room, I was excited and anxious to speak with the cast and executive producer Julie Plec about the show’s premise (based on a Belgian television series titled Cordon) and how the adaptation would translate for American audiences. Throughout the roundtable style interviews, I spoke with (in order): Kristen Gutoskie who plays Katie Frank, executive producers Chris Ord and Matt Corman, George Young who plays Dr. Victor Cannerts of the CDC, Claudia Black who plays Dr. Sabine Lommers, Hanna Mangan Lawrence who plays Teresa Keaton, Christina Moses who plays Jana Mayfield, Trevor St. John who plays Leo Greene, and finally executive producer/writer Julie Plec.

Grimm – “Inugami” Review. Ultimate Guard Dog.

Grimm – “Inugami” Review. Ultimate Guard Dog. 24

The quote in this week’s Grimm is a variation of author Samuel Johnson’s quote, “Revenge is an act of passion; vengeance of justice. Injuries are revenged; crimes are avenged.” This fits perfectly with the theme of this week’s Grimm episode, “Inuagmi,” as we meet a Japanese Wesen of the same name. In Japanese, Inugami translates to “dog god.”
