As I began watching “Perpetual Night,” a feeling came over me; could this be the end of Penny Dreadful? Everything is so ominous, more so than in previous episodes or even season finales. By the end of the episode, the dread grew. “The Blessed Dark” began and I knew by the middle we would be saying goodbye to more than just one person before it was all over. What an explosively unpredictable episode! “Ebb Tide” blows me away with its outrageous nuances; I’m still reeling from the events that transpired. Some of the moments I anticipated but others left me with my jaw hanging open in utter disbelief. With only two episodes remaining until the season three finale, the season is flying by too quickly for my liking. So much is embedded in each episode; it’s daunting as a fan to piece each of the story arcs together. Although more attention is paid to Vanessa (Eva Green) and Ethan (Josh Hartnett), there are some strange things lurking within the other plot points, particularly in Dorian (Reeve Carney) and Lily’s (Billie Piper) twisted tale. As “No Beast So Fierce” progresses, so do the various storylines. If you are at all squeamish, be warned, there is much bloodshed in “No Beast So Fierce.”

As last week’s episode “A Blade of Grass,” kept us cooped up in a padded room, “The World Is Our Hell,” gives us reprieve in the form of the wide open space of the New Mexico Territory. With room to breathe, it’s safe to say New Mexico also has its drawbacks. Water is scarce and Ethan (Josh Hartnett) has a long way to go before he reaches his father’s ranch. Other dangers lurk nearby as Inspector Rusk (Douglas Hodge) continues his relentless pursuit of Ethan but the real threat rides side-by-side with him. Hecate (Sarah Greene) desperately wants to be with Ethan and I fear she may have finally convinced him that the darkness holds peace, at least for the moment.

Sometimes, you have to remember what you’ve locked away in your mind to find clarity. Throughout “A Blade of Grass,” the only three characters we see are Vanessa (Eva Green), Dr. Seward (Patti LuPone), and the man John Clare (Rory Kinnear) was before he was turned into the creature he is today. Dr. Seward attempts to assist Vanessa through more hypnosis to uncover when she first met the “master” in the white padded room at Banning Psychiatric hospital. Through this process, many shocking things are revealed.

To sum up the two-hour season five finale of Grimm, all I can say is it’s quite an emotional roller coaster. There’s action, mystery, intrigue, diabolical deeds, and heartbreak. Even so, I’m slightly disappointed in “The Beginning of the End, Part One and Part Two.” I am confused as to where the writers are trying to lead us. First, it was the Royals, now it’s Black Claw. I’m perplexed as to what we’re supposed to take away from all that’s happened in season five. What is buried beneath all the rubble of what the Grimm writers have put us through this season? I’m not saying this finale doesn’t have exciting moments filled with intense drama, especially the final scenes, but I need more than just a good dramatic fight scene. I need clarification of what the heck is going on in the minds of these writers. Am I the only one who thinks this way?
