“No-Kimono-Zone” examines all that is wrong in Jackie’s (Edie Falco) life, and believe me, there’s a lot going on. Jackie is having sex dreams about Dr. Cruz (Bobby Cannavale); Zoey (Merritt Wever) dresses in kimonos while preparing breakfast; and, Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) is suing for custody of the girls. But a transgender patient brings a little light into Jackie’s otherwise dark life, if only temporarily.
The title of this week’s installment refers to Jackie’s kitchen which she has declared off limits for Zoey’s kimonos. Why would Zoey be wearing kimonos, you ask? She’s dressing to keep the mood for an app she’s downloaded to her phone that plays a Chinese tune designed to wake her up. I just adore Zoey—her antics always amuse me, as do Wever’s manner of speech, facial expressions and comedic timing. She’s about as good a comedic actress as they come.
Zoey is such a good-hearted person. Her taking over in the kitchen may not be such a great idea though. I’m not sure why but Jackie appears disturbed by Zoey’s motherly behavior towards Fiona (Mackenzie Aladjem) and Grace (Ruby Jerins). Could it be Zoey’s actions remind Jackie of how poorly she treated her daughters while under the influence?
Wow! Zoey and Lenny (Lenny Jacobson) are engaged. With her behavior of late, I must admit I was a bit astonished that Zoey actually accepted Lenny’s proposal. Despite Jackie’s warning not to wear the ring to work, she does and promptly loses it. While Zoey freaks out over this, I have to wonder whether losing the ring isn’t a bit Freudian. And her reaction when Coop (Peter Facinelli) finds the ring? Well, let’s just say—really, Zoey?
Speaking of Coop, he’s acting very creepy around Dr. O’Hara. He follows her around everywhere, talks to her unborn baby and wants to step into the “daddy slot.” I’m not sure I understand exactly what’s going on with Coop, and why he keeps insinuating himself into O’Hara’s pregnancy. OK, I admit—the way he fusses over the baby would be cute if he were actually the baby daddy. The funniest part of the scene with Coop and O’Hara is when he switches to a British accent while talking to O’Hara’s belly. I guess you have to hear it to understand how funny it really is.
Lonna (MJ Rodriguez) is a transgender-in-progress who goes to All Saints with some abdominal issues. What a hoot she is! Kudos to the writing staff for giving Rodriguez such witty dialogue, and kudos to her for delivering her lines so well. While I got a kick out of mostly everything Lonna says, I had the feeling she was using her shtick to avoid answering O’Hara’s questions. But tests don’t lie and her worst fears come true. I know she doesn’t want to go back to being “Mr. Mark Glotzbacher”—who can blame her with a name like that? I love the creative solution Gloria (Anna Deavere Smith) comes up with to solve Lonna’s problem. She’s one smart and shrewd lady, that’s for sure!
Observations:
Poor O’Hara, she isn’t having the easiest pregnancy but at least she doesn’t complain about how uncomfortable she is. Well, not much, anyway. I got a real kick out of the list of things she loves that she’s given up for the baby.
Gloria losing it on the fax machine is pretty damn funny. Just saying.
Zoey brags to Thor (Stephen Wallem) and Sam (Arjun Gupta) about how satisfying it is to be a mother. I think she’s taking her new roomy role a little too far.
While searching for Zoey’s ring, Jackie finds the Roxy she took in her dream. Can I just tell you how relieved I am that the sexual part of her dream doesn’t come true? How weird would that be?
Memorable lines:
Dr. O’Hara, listing the things she’s sacrificing for the baby: “Meat, seafood, scotch, sex.”
***
Zoey: “There is a girl or a guy in three.”
Jackie: “OK. You have to clarify. Is it a guy or a girl?”
Zoey: “I am currently unable to clarify.”
***
Dr. O’Hara: “You must be Lonna.”
Lonna: “Excuse me while I bow in thanks because yes, I must be Lonna.”
***
Lonna to Jackie and O’Hara: “I was afraid I’d get some ugly ass doctors but you two? You’re swingin’ it like a big fat purse.”
***
O’Hara: “…Coop circling my unborn baby. What’s more frightening than that?
Jackie: “Zoey in the kitchen stirring SpaghettiOs™ in a kimono?”
***
Not only is Kevin suing Jackie for custody of the girls, he also wants child support and the house. I don’t blame Jackie for being so upset—especially after Eddie (Paul Schulze) tells her he unwittingly gave Kevin specifics about what drugs she was using. Kevin certainly has a lot of ammunition to use against her in court. I wonder how she’s going to get out of this conundrum, if she even can.
