“Heartbreaking. Girl Taking. Troublemaking.” is printed on the DVD screener cover for Showtime’s provocative gay reality show The Real L Word
Be forewarned, if you are skittish on nudity or sexual intimacy then you may want to skip watching because these gals are not shy at all. Some scenes are bordering soft porn status. Season two, set in Los Angeles, showcases a few new faces and the return of familiar ones, such as Whitney. The dread-locked, tattooed Casanova returns and she’s still as unpredictable as ever. To paraphrase Whitney, the lesbian circle isn’t as big as you would imagine. The connections are so intertwined in NYC and LA that it’s not uncommon to date the ex or ex-ex girlfriend of one of your ex or ex-ex girlfriends. What cracks me up is the
Whitney Wheel of Lesbians (as I like to call it). Romi is Whitney’s ex-ex girlfriend whom she dated (and I use that term loosely) last season but left her to date her current ex-girlfriend Sara (pronounced Sah-Rah). <click here for my review of last season>
Well, Whitney thinks Sara is like “heroin” to a recovering addict. She even goes so far as to compare their relationship with leprosy. Seriously? Leprosy? Who wants to be in a relationship where someone feeds off you until you decay into nothing? But, like an addict who can’t resist the temptation, Whitney starts to fall for Sara again. However, Whitney’s OG (original girlfriend) Rachel, is moving back to LA from NYC and she is staying with Whitney and her roommate. Hmmm, now if that’s not begging for trouble, I don’t know what is. Oh and did I mention Rachel is friends with Hana who happens to be Sara’s ex-girlfriend. Talk about a small world!
Some of the new faces are Kacy and Cori, a married lesbian couple who are trying to have a baby. They are such a cute couple. They face some of the same challenges heterosexual couples do when they want to conceive – timing, money, and responsibility shifts in their day-to-day routine. As they try to find a suitable sperm donor, Kacy and Cori face many challenges and begin to look outside their circle of friends to find what they need to conceive. By the way, I had no idea they made Hello Kitty
Another NYC/LA connection is Claire who has been living in NYC for about ten years and has a new girlfriend, Vivian, whom she’s been with for over a year. Well, Claire has decided to move back to LA in order to decide whether the unresolved feelings she has for ex-girlfriend Francine are real or if she just needs closure to give herself fully to Vivian. Oh the drama!
Claire and Vivian are still dating but Claire wants to make sure her feelings for Francine are nothing more than just needing closure so she can fully give herself to Vivian. Confused? I’m just waiting to see how this plays out! It’s like the best soap opera drama but real life on primetime cable! We can call it ‘As The Lesbian Turns’.
And last but not least is Sajdah, a recently outed lesbian who just wants to change the minds of people about gay couples and gay marriage. She’s new to LA having moved from Washington D.C. and is making love connections via Match.com. Yeah, I was surprised too! Sajdah has a great disposition and sense of humor but being new to LA has both its advantages and disadvantages. She meets someone through the dating site but I think she is going to fall head-over-heels in love too fast and possibly become detrimentally heartbroken.
“Heartbreaking. Girl Taking. Troublemaking.” Need I say more?
