As the premiere episode of Mad Fashion opens, Chris March describes to us just what mad fashion is and what we can anticipate during the season. It definitely isn’t what you expect. Chris doesn’t do everyday fashion. He is avant-garde and as far outside the box as a designer can get—costumes are his forte. The operation is small, run out of his showroom in NYC with his team of five: Jake (March’s assistant), Christine (seamstress newbie to the team), Alex (seamster), Izzy (big hair aficionado) and Matt (Chris’ best friend and constructer of his visions). The team works together to bring Chris’ vision to life with hair, fabric and metal… Metal? Really?
For a season premiere, the pilot is good. I was looking for more drama but then I realized this isn’t your typical reality show. If you want to know the ins and outs of what happens in a designer’s shop, this is the show for you. Chris takes us through the consultation, concept and designing of an outfit for celebrity shoe designer, Ruthie Davis. She is interested in a piece for her fall collection preview and wants her outfit to bring to mind a Bond girl. Well, I think she’s satisfied and more with the creation Chris produces. Not only is it out of the box, it’s beyond anything I could have imagined. I really like the piece—especially the leather bodice with spikes—it’s awesome. It’s original all the way down to the skirt adorned with a slew of shoes.
Observations:
As the team ventures out to various stores to buy the items they need for the piece, they appear without their coats. I want to know where these coats disappear to. It is winter in New York, so of course they go out with coats, but then go into the stores without them. My Spidey sense suggests there’s someone behind this mysterious disappearing act. Can I have a personal coat check person too? Seriously, who do I need to talk to about this?
There’s a point in the episode where Chris wants to cut shoes in half to put on the bodice of the dress. The girlie girl in me screams “NO!” along with Izzy and Christine. But, it’s for fashion, so what can you do?
There are quite a few funny moments, some at Christine’s expense. Her lack of knowledge of Bond girls is pretty hilarious. She may be a much-needed source of comic relief when the team gets stressed.
I applaud Ruthie for braving the shoe cage hoop skirt. (Yes, you read that correctly.) The fear is clearly evident on her face, but she tries it on anyway. “A Bond girl wishes she could have this outfit.” You are braver than I am girl!
“This is Mad Fashion” is the voiceover as Chris March gives us his best mad scientist laugh. The fashion may be mad but it’s fabulous and one of a kind. There is definitely something for everyone in this new reality series so I think it’ll be a hit. I’m looking forward to what other surprises lay in store from Chris and his band of fashion misfits. My sole disappointment is the show is only half an hour long. You don’t get a feel for everyone’s personalities in such a short time, and I think that’ll play a big part in the popularity of the show. It just may leave you screaming, “I want more Mad Fashion!”
Tune in to the series premiere of Mad Fashion, Tuesday, October 4th at 10/9c on Bravo. For more on the show, visit http://www.bravotv.com/mad-fashion.
