Rating:
“Will Alexander be needing anything else today?” — Jonathan Harker
Dracula steps it up a notch in “Four Roses.” If you’ve watched the episode, you’ll understand the significance of the title. If you haven’t (and why haven’t you?), the title fits into the storyline perfectly. Red roses are supposed to signify love. I wonder if the person who receives these roses realizes what they mean, both for her and the person who gives them to her.
Observations and thoughts:
Lady Love
Mina’s (Jessica De Gouw) naïveté is sweet. Not really. I almost feel certain she keeps her head in the sand to avoid being hurt. She has to know things between her and Jonathan (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) have been slowly dwindling down to something akin to friendship. Who is the man Mina thinks of, fantasizes about, and yearns to see? It certainly isn’t her fiancé. “Because you love Grayson.” Uh oh … didn’t think Jonathan would say that, did you, Mina?
Game On
If Lucy (Katie McGrath) can’t see she’s a pawn on Lady Jayne’s (Victoria Smurfit) chessboard, then she really is a fool. I thought Lucy was smarter than this. She’s all but become Jayne’s lapdog and doesn’t even realize how she’s being manipulated. The girl is used to having men wrapped around her little finger. I guess the same can’t be said for Lucy’s wiles on those of her own sex (like Mina). Lucy isn’t strong enough to take down Lady Jayne. She isn’t even in the same league. You have to wonder how Lucy will fare in the world once Jayne drops her, which you know she will, once Jayne realizes she can’t get what, or better yet, who she wants—Alexander Grayson (Jonathan Rhys Meyers).
V for Vendetta
I’m a bit confused as to why Van Helsing (Thomas Kretschmann) hasn’t let Alexander in on his plans for revenge. I thought they both had it in for the Order of the Dragon, but it seems Van Helsing’s need for vengeance has overcome his rationality. He is a man suffering under an unbearable strain. I can’t imagine how it would feel to watch my children die like he has. My thing is he has Dracula on his side—the head fricking vampire. Why not utilize his ‘talents’ to get even? His instrument of torture scares the heck out of me and I’m guessing he wants his tormentor to suffer a slow and painful fate. Dracula would be about ripping limbs from bodies, kind of ruining the slow part. Oh well.
BFFs
I’m glad Alexander has Renfield (Nonso Anozie) to keep him in line. Even if he may “overstep” at times, Renfield’s curtness is a necessary evil. I don’t see anyone else reining Alexander in when he goes off the rails. Who better than the man who isn’t afraid to go up against a vampire? He’s not stupid, though; I think Renfield knows just how far he can push Alexander without going over the line.
Random Thoughts:
The costumes are absolutely fabulous. Lucy has some of the most beautiful dresses I’ve ever seen for this time period.
You know who the ultimate fool is: Jonathan Harker. How silly can the boy be? Yes, I’m calling him a boy because he isn’t behaving like a man. He gets pissed, he screws someone who isn’t his woman. He seeks vengeance and joins up with a bunch of rich psychopaths. He’s sealed his fate. I’m just gonna sit back and watch him drown.
It’s possible Van Helsing has gone insane, or maybe he’s been insane all along. At least I feel Alexander is keeping his head on straight when it comes to Browning (Ben Miles). Van Helsing is so close to slipping up though.
Memorable lines:
Van Helsing to Alexander: “Your inability to control yourself has completely derailed our plans.”
**
Lucy to Mina: “You must forget about Jonathan. Please don’t ask any questions. Just know that he isn’t the man you think he is.”
**
Alexander to Van Helsing: “That’s right, run little rabbit, run.”
**
Jonathan: “What are you doing here? How’d you get in?”
Mina: “You gave me a key, or don’t you remember?”
**
Mina: “Do you love me?”
Alexander: “Don’t ask me that.”
Mina: “Tell me.”
Alexander: “I can’t.”
**
“You keep coming back.” Mina’s words to Alexander are fitting for me as well. I keep coming back each week to see what else the writers have in store for us as they continue to weave this new take on the notorious vampire. The stakes are getting higher and alliances are being tested. Dracula just keeps getting better and better. And how about that ending?
