Review: Lost Girl, S1 Ep 8, “Vexed”
Air date: Monday, March 5, 2012, 10/9c, on Syfy
Rating:
Whoa, Nelly. I wasn’t expecting that. Why does Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) tell Bo (Anna Silk) they are having sex for the last time? I thought they both agreed they would get together just for healing sessions? They would still be hooking up. No more healing sessions would mean no more steamy scenes. We need more booty than what we saw last night so hook us up with more, writers!
The opening of this darker than usual episode is killer. In the first scene, where we see a bloodied Bo, face cut up, stumbling out of an elevator, The Kills’ “Sour Cherry” is playing in the background, as the scene cuts to a shirtless Dyson boxing in a dark room. Seeing Bo beg to be healed is slightly pathetic, but Dyson can’t resist, saying, “One more time.” Right. I don’t believe you, Dyson, nor does Bo. Don’t you see her smiley smirk as she walks out the door? What’s more, you don’t want this to be the last time, either. Who are you fooling?
It looks like we’re getting closer to finding out about Bo’s mother. Or are we? Siegfried (Jeffrey R. Smith), a silly, but quite funny, vampire with a penchant for wearing a full face of makeup, tells Bo he’s got information she wants, which leads her to Lou Ann Heidinger (Marie Ward), a Dark Fae who’s to be executed in a few days. This, in turn, leads us to a Mesmer Fae named Vex (Paul Amos), who is vexing, indeed. He’s a mirthful but dreadful killer, tormenting poor Siegfried. These two characters play off each other perfectly, with Vex delighting in Siegfried’s mortal fear. Lou Ann’s crime? Falling in love with a human. Could this be a warning for Lauren (Zoie Palmer), who seems to be falling in love with Bo?
As Bo has not chosen sides, she is being told by everyone to stay out of the Lou Ann situation as it involves the Dark Faes. Even Mayer (Aron Tager), a Dark Fae, tells her the same, explaining that both sides respect one rule – to hide their existence from humans. But she’s hell bent on finding out more, which leads to an attack on her by The Morragh (Cheryl Quiacos), a creature that feeds off rage. A consult with Trick (Rick Howland) makes her all the more determined to free Lou Ann from execution to get more information on her mother. More than that, she actually believes in Lou Ann’s innocence. I admire her tenacity. Even if she’s free of ties to any side, she’s loyal to those in need of aid and sticks to her guns when everyone tries to discourage her. What’s not to admire?
“Vexed” gives us our first love scene between Bo and Lauren. Lauren may have initiated it, but she’s not pure in her intentions, though she clearly cares about Bo and wants to protect her. We learn that she’s actually owned by The Ash (Cle Bennett) in exchange for protection. It’s evident Lauren will be faced with some tough decisions but I anticipate her joining Team Bo.
What stands out about this episode is its darkness. Most of the scenes with Bo are bleak, and she seems more menacing than usual. She looks different, but I can’t quite explain how. Are her eyebrows different? Is she scowling? Her motor is definitely revved up. I think this is meant to portend a sense of foreboding, preparing us for what is to come. Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) is relegated to the sidelines, and the difference is glaring. I miss her jokes even though we get “It smells like fried bitch” and “Obviously, you can’t have Dyson and chase after Dr. Hot Pants anymore. Time to pick a team, dude.” The darker the better, but don’t kick Kenzi to the curb, writers. That’d be a bad idea.
