Season 5, Episode 4
Air Date: Sunday, May 5, 2013, 9 pm ET/PT on Showtime
Rating:
All Saints is a busy place this week. A heavily medicated Jane Doe (Jeanine Bartel) is brought into the hospital, and Jackie (Edie Falco) orders Zoey (Merritt Wever) to find out who she is. Then, Officer Frank Verelli (Adam Ferrara) brings a man named Steve (Robbie Tann) to All Saints who is suffering from hypothermia just to see Jackie again. Speaking of Jackie, she meets Kevin (Dominic Fumusa) at the girls’ school after receiving a call that Fiona (Mackenzie Aladjem) is “acting out.” All season long, the focus has been on Grace (Ruby Jerins) but this week, it’s Fiona who’s in trouble. What’s a divorced mother to do?
Thoughts and Observations:
After all this time, it’s nice to see Jackie and Kevin “call a truce” for the sake of the girls. It’s not only Fiona who’s in trouble, though; Jackie sees 14-year-old Grace coming out of the subway with Danny (Danny Flaherty), her 17-year-old musician boyfriend. And later, Grace sneaks out of the house to watch him play guitar on a Manhattan street for money. I don’t understand today’s parents. Had that been my mother, I probably would have received, at the very least, a spanking for going behind her back. And if my daughter had done that, she’d have been grounded for a very long time. But all we see is Grace sitting at home, listening to her iPod. That doesn’t spell discipline to me, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s what Grace needs. She’s testing her limits, like all kids do, and Jackie is coming up short.
I swear, if Jackie doesn’t go out with Frank again, I will! He’s absolutely adorable and has a fantastic sense of humor. He reminds me of a big old teddy bear I want to squeeze to death. Plus, he always knows the right thing to say, and it’s obvious he respects Jackie and how important her job is to her. Wait! My mother always told me if it looks or sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Please don’t tell me Frank is going to end up being an asshole. That’s the last thing Jackie needs.
I hope Gloria’s (Anna Deavere Smith) memory loss is due to something other than Alzheimer’s. She is ‘thisclose’ to Prentiss (Morris Chestnut) reporting her ass to the medical board for her forgetfulness. I don’t think I would leave her alone with a patient, though, as Jackie is forced to do. Especially not with Prentiss keeping such a close eye on Gloria. I knew something bad would happen, and, unfortunately, I was right. Gloria loses Jackie’s Jane Doe. Poor Gloria. She’s doing everything she can to help herself, including writing everything she needs to do on colored Post-its® that are plastered all over her office. But if she doesn’t read the notes, what’s the point?
Sometimes, things aren’t always as they appear, especially when Gloria figures out the woman, who she now knows is Jennifer Farrell, is being drugged by her husband (Christian Coulson) in order to keep her from leaving the marriage. Three cheers to Jackie, Zoey, Thor (Stephen Wallem), and Gloria for standing tall in front of a seemingly angry Prentiss for helping Jennifer escape. I could have just hugged them because one by one, each comes forward and says, “I did,” when Prentiss asks who’s responsible. As much as I disliked Prentiss for the majority of “Lost Girls” for letting his promotion go to his head, I did an immediate about-face when he says, “If anything like this happens again, come to me.” I should learn to trust my instincts because prior to this episode, I thought Prentiss was a stand-up guy, which is exactly what he turns out to be in the end. I wonder if he’ll stay this way given the complexities of his job.
Coop (Peter Facinelli) asking Carrie (Betty Gilpin) out on a date just because she grabbed his “package” last week after he grabbed her boob is ridiculous. I understand he sees it as some kind of “connection,” but Carrie sees the date as a means to an end. Will Coop ever learn when he’s being taken advantage of, or does he just not care? Is he that desperate to be liked? I normally reserve the term “douchebag” for men but in this case… At first, I didn’t think Carrie realized how hurtful she was being but then I changed my mind. I think she knows exactly what she’s doing and doesn’t care who she leaves in her wake as long as she gets what she wants. I hate women like that, don’t you?
Additional thoughts:
With the way Carrie’s hands are placed on Coop’s chest, it looks like she’s giving him CPR—until the camera pans out to show the two of them having sex. How weird is that?!! Please don’t tell me she’s practicing saving lives while getting it on. And answering her cell phone in the middle of sex? WTF!
**
Much like Giuliana Rancic on Fashion Police, I can admire someone’s build for what it is. So, as much as I dislike Carrie, I must admit the woman has one helluva body. Did you see that rack she has?!!
**
Zoey thinks nothing of asking personal questions and getting into people’s business. I guess that’s why I adore her so much. Plus, she’s so devoted to Jackie, she’ll do anything to help her out—including faking an eye problem with Prentiss to throw him off Jennifer’s trail. Don’t you just love how, in Zoey’s mind, she comes on to Prentiss? It cracked me up, that’s for sure.
**
I’m not sure I understand why Jackie feels the need to call the dead Charlie Cruz (Jake Cannavale) each week. Wouldn’t it be better if she called someone who’s alive to discuss her day? Or is this the writers’ way of bringing Dr. Mike Cruz (Bobby Cannavale) back into the picture? I wonder what role Cruz will play if he returns to All Saints.
Memorable lines:
Jackie: “Isn’t Bellevue closer?”
Frank: “Last I checked, they don’t have a nurse there named Jackie Peyton.”
**
Frank: “Alright, I’m gonna need to book him. Ironic, isn’t it? You warm a guy up just to put him in the cooler.”
**
Thor to Coop: “You two give groping a bad name.”
**
Eddie (Paul Schulze) isn’t making it easy for Jackie even though he signs a “friends” contract with her. Shame on him, though, for using Fiona’s schoolwork problems as an excuse to drop in on Jackie during dinner. He better be careful or he’s going to end up with a broken heart. Or maybe, just maybe, he’ll turn things around and Jackie will succumb to his charms. I’m not sure where this is going, although that’s quite a look on Jackie’s face when she sees Frank’s picture pop up on her cell phone. What do you think about this triangle? Where are the writers going with this?
