Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) after Navarro

Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) after Navarro

Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) continues his pursuit of Navarro (Benjamin Bratt) through the streets of London. When he finally catches up with him, Jack is stunned to discover Navarro no longer has the override device on him. Did Navarro stash the device that can take control of multiple weapons systems or worse, did he hand it off to someone else?

Jack doesn’t seem fazed when he realizes Cross (Michael Wincott) has the device. The fact that Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) is with Cross as he makes his escape is another story. Agent Ritter (Gbenga Akinnagbe) asks Jack the question on everyone’s mind. “Think O’Brian was playing us? Buying her time until we got the device back so she could give it to Cross?” Emotionless, Jack responds, “My gut says no but I can’t be sure.”

Upon returning to the London CIA station, Morgan (Yvonne Strahovski) learns Navarro was the one who set her husband up as a traitor. This revelation provides little comfort to Morgan when she reveals to Jack that her husband committed suicide while in jail. Strahovski does a great job conveying the right amount of anger, frustration, and sorrow when Morgan tries to process the news that her husband was actually innocent.

Audrey (Kim Raver) is happy to have her father (William Devane) back

Audrey (Kim Raver) is happy to have her father (William Devane) back

I really enjoyed the scene between President Heller (William Devane) and his daughter Audrey (Kim Raver) when they share a private moment, especially after everything that has gone on recently. I couldn’t help laughing when Audrey scolds her father for having a drink while taking his Alzheimer’s medicine. Frankly, having just survived a drone strike assassination attempt, I don’t blame him for wanting to toss back a few. I like Heller and felt a little disappointed when he tells Audrey he still plans to resign due to his Alzheimer’s. The moment is cut short when Boudreau (Tate Donovan) interrupts them with an update of events.

The growing tension between Boudreau and Audrey is palatable. While Audrey is dealing with her father’s medical problems, and thinking he had been killed in the drone strike, not to mention the baggage surrounding Jack’s return, all Boudreau sees is the perceived threat Jack poses. Figuring as long as Jack is in the picture, possibly threatening his marriage, Boudreau reaches out to the Russian Deputy Minister Anatol (Stanley Townsend) and lets him know how to track down Jack who has been on the run from the Russian government for the past few years.

Cross fills Chloe in on bits of his plan but in a way, he actually sounds noble in doing so. Chloe reluctantly goes along with things at first but quickly starts questioning her belief in Cross’ cause. This is the weaker part of “8:00 PM—9:00 PM” as at times, Chloe seems out of it. It’s almost as if the writers couldn’t decide which direction to take Chloe — be it good or bad. Even Chloe’s escape attempt seems half-hearted.

Fearing nobody at the London CIA office will be able to intimidate Navarro because he used to be their boss, Jack informs Ritter he will be conducting the interrogation. Ritter isn’t comfortable with this idea but in typical Jack fashion, Jack sets Ritter straight, “Just so we’re clear, I wasn’t asking; that was me being courteous.”

Things do not go well as Jack quickly loses it and shatters Navarro’s hand. Is Jack simply doing what he’s done so many times before or is he doing it for Morgan’s benefit? After all, Jack knows all too well what it’s like to have family take the fall after being framed.

When Jack’s method yields no information, Morgan takes matters into her own hands pulling a gun on both the guards and Navarro. Jack steps in drawing his gun on Morgan, creating an intense standoff. Suddenly, I had flashbacks to when Jack’s partner, Curtis Manning (Roger Cross), was in Morgan’s position during season six and Jack was forced to kill him to protect the prisoner. Just as is looks like we are heading down that road again, Navarro confesses to putting a tracking unit into the override device. Turns out Jack and Morgan were playing good cop/bad cop in order to get this invaluable information.

Cheng (Tzi Ma) returns

Cheng (Tzi Ma) returns

Despite knowing Morgan’s husband was allegedly selling secrets to the Chinese, it never dawned on me that Cheng Zhi (Tzi Ma), who we last saw during season six, is behind any of this. Cheng has been one of Jack’s biggest adversaries over the years but this isn’t just about Jack. Audrey was also tortured by Cheng. Watching Cheng kill Cross and take control of the override device, forcing Chloe to do his bidding, sets up a major confrontation between Jack and Cheng.

Before that showdown can happen, though, the Russians, despite Boudreau’s attempt to call them off, ambush Jack and Morgan and a huge shootout unfolds. Meanwhile, using the override device, Cheng orders a US naval ship to fire on a Chinese vessel, destroying it just as the 24 clock hits 9:00 PM

With the Russians after Jack and Cheng back in the picture, I can’t wait to see what happens in the final two episodes of 24: Live Another Day.

I provide testosterone to the site. You won’t be reading about how nice a actress looks in a dress or how much of a hunk Matt Bomer is in my reviews. I describe colors using words like brown, not taupe. My twitter name is @staffaroadtrip because I love road trips and have done two different 48-state road trips since 2008. My favorite show is White Collar.
