24: Live Another Day - “7:00 PM—8:00 PM” Recap. Not Dead Yet.

“He did it.” – Audrey

Good to see President Heller still alive

Despite Prime Minister Davies’ (Stephen Fry) request for the people of London to stay calm, panic erupts on the streets following the missile strike on Wembley Stadium. Little do people know, United States President Heller (William Devane) was inside the stadium and the target of the attack. How will the world react to the news of Heller’s death?

Surprise! Heller isn’t dead. Turns out Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) is able to work her magic and access the drone camera feed to set it on a loop, making it look like Heller is still standing there when the missile hits.

“7:00 PM—8:00 PM” is 24: Live Another Day at its finest, especially when Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) sums things up perfectly, saying, “Mr. President, please, get in the car and let me do what I know how to do.” What it really boils down to is the writers of 24 want the audience to suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride, and frankly, after about two seconds of eye rolling, that is exactly what I did.

Following the Heller reveal, Jack informs both the London branch of the CIA and Heller’s staff, including his daughter Audrey (Kim Raver), that the President is “very much alive.” As the camera picks up the various stunned expressions in the room, I kept waiting for someone to ask “how,” to which I imagine Jack replying, “Because I am Jack Bauer, that’s how.” While I didn’t get the dialogue I was dreaming of, the scene is powerful to watch, mainly because of Jack’s relationship with Audrey. Equally powerful and emotional is when Heller is reunited with his staff and, more importantly, Audrey.

Believing the President is dead, Margot (Michelle Fairley) keeps her word and ditches five of the drones under her control into the sea. As Margot’s son Ian (Liam Garrigan) is getting ready to ditch the final drone, he realizes Heller has tricked them. Ian is able to turn the last drone around and aim it for the very crowded Waterloo Station, which, obviously, will kill thousands of civilians.

This sets up an exhilarating race against the clock for Jack and Chloe to stop Margot as the drone heads towards its target. With Cross’ (Michael Wincott) help, Chloe is able to pinpoint Margot’s location. Morgan (Yvonne Strahovski) and Ritter (Gbenga Akinnagbe) are the first to arrive and find Margot’s men waiting for them with guns drawn. Jack arrives by helicopter, landing on the roof but he, too, finds himself confronted by Margot’s men. I admit, there are times I have become numb to some of the conflict on 24 because the whole show is so intense. Yet, during the gunfight in “7:00 PM—8:00 PM,” I felt a rush I had not felt all season as the scene plays out.

I have commented previously in some reviews about Jack being a kinder, gentler version of himself this season.Most of the torture scenes have been at the hands of Morgan, not Jack. My thoughts went out the window, along with Ian and Margot, when Jack literally tosses them out of a five-story building to their death. While I am glad Margot is gone, it would have been fun to see Heller confront Margot face to face.

Navarro making a deal with Cross

With the Margot/drone storyline over, Navarro’s (Benjamin Bratt) storyline picks up when the police discover Reed’s (Giled Matthey) body. Fearing his connection to Reed’s death will lead back to him, Navarro reaches out to Cross for help getting away. Cross promises to help if Navarro hands over the override device Jack recovered from Margot. This sets up more tension-filled moments as Navarro figures out how to get the override device out of the compound. We still don’t know what Navarro’s connection to Cross is, and why he apparently feels no remorse for committing what amounts to treason.

The final 15 minutes of “7:00 PM—8:00 PM” set up what will hopefully be a thrilling final three episodes. Navarro is on the run and Chloe is back with Cross. What does Cross plan to do with the override device, and does Chloe know what he is up to? More importantly, if it comes down to Jack versus Cross, which one will Chloe choose? Something tells me Chloe may not survive throughout the remainder of the series.

Twists, gunfights, and people falling to their death make “7:00 PM—8:00 PM” one of the best episodes of 24: Live Another Day. It also poses many new questions. Is Heller still President? After all, he did submit his resignation. How does Boudreau (Tate Donovan) feel about Jack being the hero, especially since Audrey clearly still has feelings for Jack? Will Audrey and Boudreau’s marriage last? What about Boudreau’s deal with the Russians to hand over Jack?
