“Because Jack, I know what happened the day you disappeared.” Chloe
Having eluded Agent Morgan (Yvonne Strahovski) and her team, Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) and Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) continue their search for Derek Yates (Joseph Millson), the computer hacker Jack believes is responsible for hacking a military drone and killing four soldiers. But when they find him he has already been killed. Will Jack be able to figure out who now controls the device used to override the drones before more are killed?
Back at Yates’ apartment Agent Morgan tries to interrogate the men protecting Yates but they all refuse to talk. Worried about the fallout of American agents shooting up a housing project in a foreign country during a diplomatic crisis, Navarro (Benjamin Bratt) tells Ritter (Gbenga Akinnagbe) he and Morgan need to let the men go and get out of there. Morgan isn’t convinced the men don’t know more and ends up taking one of them, Basher (Tamer Hassan), with her. Later, in a move that even Jack would appreciate, Agent Morgan is able to get Basher to tell her that Yates was involved with drones.
Hacking into area camera feeds, Chloe is able to spot Simone (Emily Berrington) getting on the subway, carrying the device Chloe and Jack are searching for. They/the two are able to catch up to the train at the next stop but Simone cleverly eludes Jack and gets away. What did you think of how Simone got away? I’m not sure I could do it.
With Simone escaping, the writers do a nice job of catching the audience up on what has been going on in Chloe’s life since we last saw her. It’s a touching scene that also gives Jack a rare moment to pause and be there for Chloe. Will the death of her son continue to haunt Chloe? As much as I enjoy her character, I wonder if the writers are sending her down a dangerous path.
In my previous review I talked about Americans growing frustrated with the war, and words like “torture” and “water boarding.” The writers seem to have toned Jack down slightly and are using Agent Morgan to do the things audiences have become accustomed to Jack doing in the past. Is this to ease some criticism off the popular hero or simply how things fall into place? It would be fun seeing the two fighting side by side at some point.
Ron Clark (Ross McCall) brings the President’s Chief of Staff Boudreau (Tate Donovan) a document that would turn Jack over to the Russians once he was captured. Clark tells Boudreau all it needs is President Heller’s (William Devane) signature. Boudreau tells Clark to leave it with him and he will get it. When Clark leaves, Boudreau forges the document with the President’s signature. I doubt I am the only one who doesn’t think things will end well for Boudreau.
Speaking of President Heller, I am not a fan of giving the president Alzheimer’s as a plot device. It seems like the writers are taking the easy way out storywise to simply chalk things up to an illness rather than making Heller look weak or corrupt.
Using facial recognition, Chloe is able to identify Simone but even more disturbing is the realization that her mother is Margot Al-Harazi (Michelle Fairley), widow of a notorious terrorist who was killed in a US drone strike. I like that the writers went with a new terrorist, instead of introducing the audience to the wife of a terrorist Jack had killed.
The Al-Harazi storyline is the weakest storyline so far this season. I am not sure if the writers are trying to make the family seem more human by showing the audience their daily life but every time one of the Al-Harazis are on screen, the pace of things slow way down, making me want to tune those scenes out.
With Chloe’s belief system shaken over the events of the last few years, it is interesting watching her interaction with Jack (who she seems to resent to some extent). For years Chloe has been at Jack’s beck and call but with the addition of Michael Wincott (Adrian Cross) as the leader of Open Cell—which Chloe belongs to—her loyalties are split. It’s also an adjustment for Jack who is accustomed to only having to ask her for something once. I have a feeling Cross and Jack will butt heads a few more times before the season is done.
Using an identity created by Chloe, Jack tries to gain entrance to the US Embassy to seek out Chris Tanner (John Boyega), the US Soldier accused of using a drone to kill four soldiers. Unfortunately, Agent Morgan has the same idea and as she arrives on the scene, shots ring out and chaos ensues. The 24 clock continues counting down, marking the end to a good but not great episode.
