Someone is trying to kill Raylan. Could it be the Bennetts in retaliation for Coover’s (Brad William Henke) untimely demise? Or could it be the Miami cartel coming back for revenge? “Debts and Accounts” is busier than a one-armed bandit! There is so much going on in this episode and it’s chock full of surprises.
Art (Nick Searcy) surprises me with his revelation of how he truly feels about Raylan (Timothy Olphant). Their conversation is quite enlightening and to be honest, I’ve been upset with Raylan too. His relationship with Winona (Natalie Zea) has clouded his judgment most grievously. He’s been bending way too many rules for my taste and it seems Art feels the same way.
Raylan: “Well, because I’d like to know where I stand moving forward.”
Art: “I don’t think you would, Raylan. I think what you want is to walk in here and have me go, ‘Just sit down son, tell me in your emotionally crippled way just what it is that’s troubling your heart so we can get back what we’ve lost.’”
Raylan: “Ok. Sorry. Forget it.”
Raylan begins to walk away
Art: “No, no, no, no. You opened this can, let’s eat it all. Get back in here.”
Raylan stands defensively.
Art: “Let me tell you something, Raylan.”
Raylan: “Huh.”
Art: “Now, you know that thing that never happened that we never talked about…we’re not gonna talk about it.”
Raylan: (confused) “Ok.”
Art: “Now do you understand what that means?”
Raylan: “No.”
Art: “That means I’m stuck with you. I’m stuck with a man who’s a lousy Marshal but a good lawman. You are who you are; nothing I say has ever made any difference. No punishment I could dream up will ever change you. Kinda makes me sad, believe it or not, because I thought at one point that maybe someday you and I’d be able to look back on all this and laugh. But shit, I don’t think you’re gonna live that long. You just go on and do what you do and I’ll just keep cleaning up after you. Sooner or later, this problem is gonna solve itself.”
Is Art psychic? Strange he would say something like that when someone actually is trying to kill Raylan.
Mags (Margo Martindale) visits her rival Helen (Linda Gehringer) to give her a share of the money from the Black Pike mining deal. After losing her son, Helen is amazed Mags is out conducting business. But Mags isn’t one for resting on her laurels even in the face of tragedy.
Helen: “Business ought to stand aside for other things…personal things.”
Mags: “Helen, girl. Business don’t stand aside for anything. And after losing Coover, I intend to weigh all my debts and accounts.”
Mags makes some big changes to the family business in the wake of Coover’s death, among them is cutting her son Dickie (Jeremy Davies) off after giving him what’s left of the weed business. She believes Coover’s death is a result of Dickie’s betrayal of the family by succumbing to Raylan’s torture instead of taking it like a man. I’m glad she’s not my mama.
A Crowder returns. When Boyd (Walton Goggins) talks to his cousin, Johnny Crowder (guest star David Meunier), whom I thought was dead after he was shot in the abdomen in season one, I was a bit surprised. He’s alive but unfortunately in a wheel chair. Boyd apologizes to him for all the things gone wrong in the past as he tries to persuade Johnny to help him resurrect his father’s drug business, however, Johnny is reluctant and rightly so. It was Boyd’s father who shot him.
I was hoping he wouldn’t, but after Mags gives Boyd free reign to do what he wants in Harlan County (except get into the weed business), he doesn’t hesitate to jump back into his outlaw ways again. I’m upset because he’s so much better than this, but I’m also excited because I know the drama is about to get kicked up a few notches. And as I suspected, Boyd and Ava finally connect romantically. Even though I was expecting it, I still wasn’t fully prepared to see it. Admittedly, I was secretly hoping Raylan would give up on Winona and reconcile with Ava because I fear staying with Winona will only lead to more trouble for Raylan.
Funniest line tonight goes to Dickie. As he approaches Boyd to discuss the changes his mother’s made in the drug hierarchy, he makes a comment regarding one of Boyd’s new henchman, Devil (Kevin Rankin). “And milkshake over here, well, he probably has ta whistle when he takes a sh*t so he knows which end to wipe.”
